Ogre Kingdoms (jan 2005)
Wood Elves (aug 2005)
Dwarfs* (mar 2006)
*redo
Note that the last couple of books were written when the 7th edition rules were almost completely done and so they work much better under 7th edition than most other 6th edition armies. For that reason they are not very likely to get an update at all in 7th edition and will more likely be redone in early 8th edition.

7th edition
The seventh edition of the rulebook was published in september 2006 and like the change from 4th to 5th edition, going from 6th to 7th changed relatively little. All army books remailed useable, though naturally some things became more or less useful than they were.

Army books released so far during 7th edition
Orcs & Goblins (oct 2006)
Empire (jan 2007)
High Elves (nov 2007)
Vampire Counts (mar 2008)
Daemons of Chaos (may 2008)
Dark Elves (aug 2008)
Warriors of Chaos (nov 2008)

Upcoming known army books (in order)
Lizardmen (feb 2009)
Skaven (july/august? 2009)
Beasts of Chaos (late 2009 / early 2010?)
Tomb Kings (late 2009 / early 2010?)

Army books just behind the horizon (order not known)
Ogre Kingdoms (early 2010?)
Bretonnia (first half 2010?)
Note that releases more than a year away are always subject to change (though this does not happen very often), so we can only know things that are reasonably close for certain anyway.

8th edition
At the moment it looks like 8th edition will hit us medio 2010, with a release schedule probably similar to what Warhammer 40K had in 2008 - a new rulebook in july(ish) and a new starter set in september(ish). Most army books will have been released by that time, the starter set will be four years old (common lifespan for an edition of the core games is 4 years) and GW will likely want to put out a new, fresh one to attract new customers and tempt the veterans with deals that are "just too good not to get, even if I don't play either of the two armies". It is important to understand that new editions are primarily made to keep the excitement about the game high and NOT primarily about balancing anything. So expect rule tweaks to make the game more immersive and intuitve first and foremost.

The starter set will almost certainly include two set starter forces, quite different from each other. It will most likely be one "goodie" and one "baddie". The odds of it being Orcs & Goblins versus Empire are quite high.

Wild suggestions that will certainly crop up are:
- all existing army books will be invalidated (rubbish)
- Warhammer might switch to a D10 system instead of D6 (rubbish)
- the turn order might change from I Go, You Go to some kind of integrated system (rubbish)
- the game background might change dramatically, with the Empire being conquered by Chaos or something similar (rubbish)
These things always turn up when a new edition is underway and should be regarded with a healty dose of skepticism.

Army books or projects far off or uncertain
Dwarfs (early 8th edition?)
Wood Elves (early 8th edition?)
Chaos Dwarfs (GW "will develop them when we will have the time to, and resources")
Dogs of War (no plans to develop them)

A Testimony Vibrant and True

Ensign, August 2005
.
By President Gordon B. Hinckley
.
We often sing in our congregations a favorite hymn, "An Angel from on High," whose words were written more than a century and a half ago by Parley P. Pratt. 1 They represent his declaration of the miraculous coming forth of a remarkable book. Exactly 176 years ago this fall that book was first being set in type and run on a press in Palmyra, New York.
.
It is inspiring to learn how Parley Pratt came to know of the book about which he wrote the words of this hymn. In August of 1830, as a lay preacher, he was traveling from Ohio to eastern New York. At Newark, along the Erie Canal, he left the boat and walked 10 miles (16 km) into the country where he met a Baptist deacon by the name of Hamlin, who told him "of a book, a strange book, a VERY STRANGE BOOK! . . . This book, he said, purported to have been originally written on plates either of gold or brass, by a branch of the tribes of Israel; and to have been discovered and translated by a young man near Palmyra, in the State of New York, by the aid of visions, or the ministry of angels. I inquired of him how or where the book was to be obtained. He promised me the perusal of it, at his house the next day. . . . Next morning I called at his house, where, for the first time, my eyes beheld the 'BOOK OF MORMON'—that book of books . . . which was the principal means, in the hands of God, of directing the entire course of my future life.
.
"I opened it with eagerness, and read its title page. I then read the testimony of several witnesses in relation to the manner of its being found and translated. After this I commenced its contents by course. I read all day; eating was a burden, I had no desire for food; sleep was a burden when the night came, for I preferred reading to sleep.
.
"As I read, the spirit of the Lord was upon me, and I knew and comprehended that the book was true, as plainly and manifestly as a man comprehends and knows that he exists." 2
.
Parley Pratt was then 23 years of age. The reading of the Book of Mormon affected him so profoundly that he was soon baptized into the Church and became one of its most effective and powerful advocates. In the course of his ministry he traveled from coast to coast across what is now the United States, into Canada, and to England; he worked in the isles of the Pacific and was the first Latter-day Saint missionary to set foot on the soil of South America. In 1857, while serving a mission in Arkansas, he was shot in the back and killed by an assailant. He was buried in a rural area near the community of Alma, and today in that quiet place a large block of polished granite marks the site of his grave. Incised in its surface are the words of another of his great and prophetic hymns, setting forth his vision of the work in which he was engaged:
.
The morning breaks, the shadows flee; Lo, Zion's standard is unfurled! . . .
The dawning of a brighter day Majestic rises on the world.
The clouds of error disappear Before the rays of truth divine; . . .
The glory bursting from afar Wide o'er the nations soon will shine. 3
.
Parley Pratt's experience with the Book of Mormon was not unique. As the volumes of the first edition were circulated and read, strong men and women by the hundreds were so deeply touched that they gave up everything they owned, and in the years that followed not a few even gave their lives for the witness they carried in their hearts of the truth of this remarkable volume.
.
Today, a century and three-quarters after its first publication, the Book of Mormon is more widely read than at any time in its history. Whereas there were 5,000 copies in that first edition, about 5,000,000 are currently distributed each year, and the book or selections from the book are available in 106 languages.
.
Its appeal is as timeless as truth, as universal as mankind. It is the only book that contains within its covers a promise that by divine power the reader may know with certainty of its truth.
Its origin is miraculous; when the story of that origin is first told to one unfamiliar with it, it is almost unbelievable. But the book is here to be felt and handled and read. No one can dispute its presence. All efforts to account for its origin, other than the account given by Joseph Smith, have been shown to lack substance. It is a record of ancient America. It is a scripture of the New World, as certainly as the Bible is the scripture of the Old. Each of these volumes of scripture speaks of the other. Each carries with it the spirit of inspiration, the power to convince and to convert. Together they become two witnesses, hand in hand, that Jesus is the Christ, the resurrected and living Son of the living God.
.
The Book of Mormon narrative is a chronicle of nations long since gone. But in its descriptions of the problems of today's society, it is as current as the morning newspaper and much more definitive, inspired, and inspiring concerning the solutions of those problems.
.
I know of no other writing which sets forth with such clarity the tragic consequences to societies that follow courses contrary to the commandments of God. Its pages trace the stories of two distinct civilizations that flourished on the Western Hemisphere. Each began as a small nation, its people walking in the fear of the Lord. But with prosperity came growing evils. The people succumbed to the wiles of ambitious and scheming leaders who oppressed them with burdensome taxes, who lulled them with hollow promises, who countenanced and even encouraged loose and lascivious living. These evil schemers led the people into terrible wars that resulted in the death of millions and the final and total extinction of two great civilizations in two different eras.
.
No other written testament so clearly illustrates the fact that when men and nations walk in the fear of God and in obedience to His commandments, they prosper and grow, but when they disregard Him and His word, there comes a decay that, unless arrested by righteousness, leads to impotence and death. The Book of Mormon is an affirmation of the Old Testament proverb: "Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people" (Proverbs 14:34).
.
The God of heaven spoke to these people of the Americas through prophets, telling them where true security could be found: "Behold, this is a choice land, and whatsoever nation shall possess it shall be free from bondage, and from captivity, and from all other nations under heaven, if they will but serve the God of the land, who is Jesus Christ" (Ether 2:12).
.
While the Book of Mormon speaks with power to the issues that affect our modern society, the great and stirring burden of its message is a testimony, vibrant and true, that Jesus is the Christ, the promised Messiah, He who walked the dusty roads of Palestine healing the sick and teaching the doctrines of salvation; who died upon the cross of Calvary; who on the third day came forth from the tomb, appearing to many. Prior to His final Ascension, He visited the people of this Western Hemisphere, concerning whom He earlier had said, "And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd" (John 10:16).
.
For centuries the Bible stood alone as a written testimony of the divinity of Jesus of Nazareth. Now, at its side, stands a second and powerful witness which has come forth "to the convincing of the Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God, manifesting himself unto all nations" (Book of Mormon title page).
.
As I indicated earlier, at this season exactly 176 years ago the first edition of the Book of Mormon, which had been translated "by the gift and power of God" (Book of Mormon title page) was being set in type and run on a small press in Palmyra, New York. Its publication preceded and was a forerunner to the organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which took place on April 6, 1830.
.
We studied the Book of Mormon in Sunday School this past year. Nonetheless I offer a challenge to members of the Church throughout the world and to our friends everywhere to read or reread the Book of Mormon. If you will read a bit more than one and one-half chapters a day, you will be able to finish the book before the end of this year. Very near the end of its 239 chapters, you will find a challenge issued by the prophet Moroni as he completed his record nearly 16 centuries ago. Said he:
.
"And I exhort you to remember these things; for the time speedily cometh that ye shall know that I lie not, for ye shall see me at the bar of God; and the Lord God will say unto you: Did I not declare my words unto you, which were written by this man, like as one crying from the dead, yea, even as one speaking out of the dust? . . .
.
"And God shall show unto you, that that which I have written is true" (Moroni 10:27, 29).
Without reservation I promise you that if each of you will observe this simple program, regardless of how many times you previously may have read the Book of Mormon, there will come into your lives and into your homes an added measure of the Spirit of the Lord, a strengthened resolution to walk in obedience to His commandments, and a stronger testimony of the living reality of the Son of God.

Valentine's Day

When you don't see anything on the blog, it means that there is a lot going on.

Here's a summary:
Saturday was Valentine's day. My wife and I went out with her sisters and their husbands. We all get along ever so well.

We went to Rodizio Grill which is a Argentinian type steakhouse where they come around with all sorts of meat on skewers and cut you off a chunk if you want. Alligator, boar, pork, steak, and so forth. Sort of like Noah's ark gone wrong.

God: ding! Billy Bob, what happened to all the animals?
Billy Bob (Noah's lesser known cousin-- in redneck accent): Weeeell, we was gettin' a little peckish ya see...

Then off to a local playhouse for some wholesome entertainment.

That was quite a night.

On Sunday we had over relatives and friends for a lunch-type thing. At church we gave Willow a name and a blessing. Afterwards, sitting in the pew, I cradled the sleeping baby girl in my arms for about a half hour, just looking at her admiringly. It felt like everything faded away and we were alone inside a giant egg of peace and tranquility.

Lizardmen of the Topaz Temple

It's official, the studio Lizardmen army is underway. Here's what's in it:

Slann Mage Priest (we are going to incorporate new Engine of the Gods parts on this) x1
Scar Veteran x1
Skink Priest x1
Skink Priest on Stegadon Engine of the Gods! x1
Saurus Warriors x20
Skinks x24
Skink Scouts x10
Kroxigors x3
Temple Guard x20
Stegadon x1
Barbed Razordons x3

I have plans on converting up a Tetto'Eko, too. I think he is outstanding. The ability to re-arrange 1d3 friendly units after deployment is outstanding. I think it's a game-winner. Nevermind that it seems like a really fun model to make.

We've got everything in and being assembled except the Razordons. We are working on color scheme.

The skinks are already done. Some of you may recall that I painted up 34 of them for my D&D game last year, using them as Kobolds. That's a nice head start.

All told the army is 2500 points. So, it's plenty big.

The major decision was to include a Slann Mage Priest instead of an Oldblood on Carnosaur. Of course, you don't need a huge old Carnosaur with all those Stegadons running around. They are harder to kill than a Giant. I guess we'll see the army in action soon enough and find out what's what.

On another front, I'm painting up another unit of Black Guard for my ice elves army. I can't wait to take them for a spin.

Book your projects for March now. I'm running a really good special and there are still some slots left for that (see 30/30 special below). We would just love to do some Tyranids especially.

You might remember "Hive Fleet Hades", a refurb army that we have now sold off. I got some really good feedback on that army list-- shooty and hitty. Doing that army again, that same list, but maybe a different color scheme would be a dream project.

A little-known fact: I am available by appointment to create armies. I will help you set everything up over the phone, including advising on all aspects you want. The whole thing can be underway by the end: instructions, concept, models ordered, and deposit paid. I can type everything for you.

I am a demon on the keyboard.

New Lizardmen spreadsheet ready

Get a detailed spreadsheet of costs here.
Here is a video on how to use the spreadsheet. You do not have to fill this out yourself. I will be happy to work from an emailed list.
You need to RIGHT CLICK on the link and click save as.
Remember: there are a few slots open for the 30/30 special for Lizardmen.

Ogre Freaks

Many years ago I converted and painted this Ogre Kingdoms army of grotesque monstrosities for my own amusement. Now a good friend of mine is selling it.

Look at the freak show.

Own a piece of Gately History.

30/30 Special

Here's the special I'm running for projects booked for completion in March 2009. Projects need to be set up ahead of time, so this special will run from today until the slots are filled up. Project would need to get set up during February. There are six slots open for this special. I will announce when they run out.

You should ask for the special by name. That way I know how much business is generated by it.

For the following armies you can get 30% off on materials and 30% off on painting if you give Artistic License*:

  • Cryx
  • Legion of Everblight
  • Tyranids
  • Necrons
  • Vampire Counts
  • Lizardmen
I am doing a similar special, but 20/20, for these armies (four slots open):
  • Orks
  • Eldar
  • High Elves
  • Dark Elves
  • Wood Elves
  • Khador
  • Trollbloods
*You pick armament/weapon options and how they are assembled. We pick basing and painting style/colors. The limitation is that they have to be within the genre (ie no pink vampires), but we do get a broad interpretation there.

Alternate Earth

I came across this unusual game. It's set in some kind of Alternate Earth sci-fi World War Two setting.

What's Next? A Land Raider!

Mournful Knight

Song of the Day (stuck in my head)

I started listening to Devo when I was in junior high. My 7th grade class book had a picture of a computer with this caption: "Computers: wave of the future or passing fad?"

Imperial Guard Rumors and Opinion

Here is a veritable tome of IG rumors and verifications with my own comments in bold.
.
I also might add that I have various IG items for sale.
.
All of this was lifted from http://www.warseer.com/ and thanks to "the dude" for taking the time.
.
Also not that in there you see a concept sketch for a Dark Eldar splinter rifle. The Dark Eldar are going to be huge.
.
General info
Release Rumoured to be 2 May 2009.
Holy crap, that's really soon. I thought it would be later this year.

Rumoured to include at least 2 waves of releases. It is unclear when the second wave will appear.
I'm not a fan of the two wave release, since I can't finish the army until months later. But it's better than NO second release!

The following pic is from the March WD and confirms some of the rumours below including Orders, New Ratlings and the Valkyrie.

Rules
Army-wide Special Rules

Doctrines
Doctrines have supposedly been replaced by Platoons options, so for example, rather than Armoured fist squads a player would buy Chimeras for a whole platoon, or buy the whole platoon grav-chutes to give them deep strike, or drop the heavy weapons from squads and give the platoon Scout. No details on exactly what upgrades are available have emerges as yet. This system would allow “crusade” style armies of multiple regiments.
I'm glad to hear that the doctrines are going to be in there somehow. This is consistent with what is being done generally: rolling all the rules into the main army list itself. One of the funnest things to do with an Imperial Guard army is to theme it. The IG list has also been the default list for a lot of unusual armies, like Squats. It looks like there is enough flexibility here to do some weird armies.

Another rumour says that there will be multiple flavours of Platoon with varying rules and options, such as Heavy Platoons, the squads will have the option of taking up to three heavy weapons teams; Assault Platoons, able to take up to three assault weapons; Stealth Platoons possibly able to infiltrate. It is not clear if this was based on a proper rumour or mutant wishlisting.

This has been given some credence with catdubh posting the following:

Also told Heavy Weapons squads are now 10 men not six and that the rumour of all squads in a platoon being able to take 3 Heavies per squad is not quite right. Instead a Heavy Weapon Squad can be attached to a platoon. Very similar but as to which one is correct we will have to wait

Orders

reds8n broke the news on Orders with the following:

.... and one that in affect puts the platoon onto overwatch.

Orders are given by Officers to a squad (note not the whole Platoon) within command radius or via Vox channel. Orders generally make a squad do something such as make them better shots, rally, or recover from things like pinning or gone to ground. These orders are not automatic and will probably require a Ld test.
Orders will be one or maybe two orders per Officer per turn, and it is assumed Platoon Officers will only be able to order their own Platoon whilst army Commanders will be able to order anyone. This has not been confirmed.
Some rumoured Orders include:“TAAAANK!!” which allows the squad to add +1 to penetrate armour for a turn of shooting.

"Front Rank Fire, Second Rank Fire" which allows the squad to shoot twice to represent your men firing in well timed volleys to increase rate of fire. This is probably just Lasguns.
Overwatch would supposedly allow them a round of shooting during the enemy’s shooting phase at the cost of not shooting and assaulting next turn (effectively going to ground).
I have been told the Orders system works a bit different to how it is currently rumoured above, but wasn’t able to get clarification yet.
Bring on the Orders. It's an additional complication to playing the game, but I think it will give some good flavor. I will be glad to see Overwatch come back in some form.

Miscellaneous
Some squads will supposedly have access to heavy flamers, but it is not clear which ones.
HQ
OfficerCan reportedly be upgraded for x-amount to get Storm Troopers as Troops
This is the best news and I hope it's true. One thing I don't like about 40K is that all the fun choices are outside of the Troops list. Troops are boring. I wish they would stop forcing me to take them. It's so contrived. But Storm Troopers are cool.

Primaris PsykerApparently able to blast tanks with a psychic power. No further details have emerged as yet.
Well, almost anything would be improvement over the old pieces of crap. Rolling powers randomly is lame. If they were like zoanthropes as mid-range heavy hitters to support other units that would be cool. But more than that I'd like to see them as viable support units.

Commissar Lord Early on was rumoured to allow Stormtroopers as Troops choices. This has since been debunked. Newer rumours say he is described as having lots of inspirational powers (possibly fearless) and will supposedly allow more freedom in selecting Commissars for other squads.

Inquisitor and Retinue Very early rumours pointed to an entry for IG as an HQ choice, which would supposedly appear much like the elites from the current Daemon Hunters/Witch Hunters books. There has been no recent mention of this however.
This is another great opportunity for using out-of-the-ordinary miniatures. Great possibilities for conversions here. This is along the lines of miniatures crossovers like using imperial vehicles for Ork looted stuff.

Commissars Are supposedly now squad upgrades, technically allowing a lot of Commissars to appear in an army. Rumours now say they are allowed to attach to “certain squads”, However once a Commissar Lord is taken they have more freedom and there can be more of them. They are also supposedly cheaper (almost half their current price).
Commissars are overpriced now in my estimation. It's the old eggs and hammers thing. If a model is very weak on defense it doesn't matter so much how much offense it has. Of course, being in a giant unit, a meat shield is a sort of defense. Eldar suffer from this a lot, and you see that people won't take these units. Like Swooping Hawks. They have a zillion powers, but they are T3 and low armor. Same for Shining Spears.

GGM007 also offered the following from a GW Manager:

Master of the FleetRumoured to allow some type of orbital bombardment, details unknown.
AstropathSupposedly has a 'predicting' ability, possibly similar to Sicarius's ability to re-roll "seize the initiative".

Master of the Watch
Artillery Officer. Rules unknown.
There are apparently a few other things that you can give the Command Squad to affect the army. No further details are available as yet.

Elites
StormtroopersThe assumption has been made based on the WIP Stormtrooper mini that Stormtroopers will be able to take shotguns this has since been refuted, with the new rumour being they are for WH Arbites-style Stormtroopers.
Are there going to be Storm Trooper plastics? If so, this would be consistent a la the Temple Guard for Lizardmen-- a new plastic kit of an Elite type.

You can supposedly have a Storm Trooper Squad/Platoon as a Troops choice (not clear if this means both or one of), but this is reliant on an upgrade to the Officer leading the army. They may also get to pick from a list of mission 'operations', such as outflank, deepstrike etc. They may be able to infiltrate if not transported.

Bestiaparda offered the following:

Yeah, but what will they cost? This sounds quite powerful ifi you ask me. Of course, people don't take Thousand Sons that often.

This has been confirmed by one of my Ninja who said that AP3 "hot shots" for Hell Guns will be in there, but wasn’t sure if it was a permanent thing. He gathered it's more likely going to be like the Dire Avengers’ Blade Storm skill.
This sounds more like it. Like that first volley is lower AP.

OgrynsRumoured to be T5 with a 4+ save and Feel No Pain. Further rumours said EITHER T5 or FNP will make the final cut, but probably not both. More recently rumoured to be 25 pts, S5 T5 A3 Sv4+ Furious Charge.
See? They are starting to give more defenses to some units. You'll notice that things cost less points in 40K than they do in Fantasy. That's because a Lascannon is a great leveller.

Sniper SquadsCan supposedly infiltrate, get stealth, range finders and all models in the squad have sniper rifles and BS 4. A new rumour says they will also get camo cloaks.

Veteran Squads Have been rumoured to become upgrades to platoons rather than Elites choices and may work like Ork Ard Boyz in that you may upgrade one unit in the whole army. Although a newer rumour says they probably won’t be upgrades for platoons.

Troops
Imperial Guard PlatoonsPlatoons will supposedly be structured as follows: 1 command squadPlus up to 5 of the following taking into account specific limitations -2 - 5 infantry squads0 - 5 heavy weapons squads (this is suspected to be a typo)0 - 2 special weapons squads0 - 1 conscript squadThe entire platoon with all these squads will only take one Troops selection in the FOC.
OK, so they are taking all these elite type squads out of the command section?

Platoons are rumoured to be able to attach sentinels, chimeras, and hellhounds as support vehicles, but not demolishers as previously thought.
Well, this is great, because the problem I had with my IG army was not enough slots. The more that can get crammed into the Troops section the better.

Platoons will supposedly benefit from a special rule called "Platoon Drill" which grants the ability to ignore any other squad within the Platoon for the purposes of determining the enemy's cover save. What this means is that the Guard squads will get a cover save when being shot at through a squad in the same Platoon, but their enemy will not get one when the squad shoots back. This will supposedly only work if the Vox network is still intact.

Platoons have been rumoured to have a great number of options available to them including attaching various support vehicles like sentinels, hellhounds and demolishers. They still take up a FOC spot, but become part of the platoon and so will benefit from “Platoon Drill” and other Platoon-wide rules rule. Platoons are rumoured to be able to merge into one big unit (sort of the opposite of Space Marine combat squads). So for example the platoon HQ and all its squads can merge into a single unit to hold an objective. Some more rules are probably applied to this but no further details have emerged forthcoming.

Kill Points for Platoons have been ruloured to be 1KP per half of the Platoon killed. More recently, this has been rumoured to be 1 KP for the entire Platoon, although there is some conjecture about whether Officers will yield a further KP. This could possibly be related to the ability to merge the Platoon into a single unit, thereby giving up a single KP.

There has been much talk about a point decrease to 4points per Guardsman. This has also been rumoured to be 50 point Infantry squads (10 men with Sgt, Heavy Bolter & Flamer). Another rumour says the basic squad load-out will be 10 Lasguns or 9 Lasguns and a Laspistol for 40 points.
GW really screwed the pooch with the Orks. Now every single army will have their basic models compared to the 6 point Ork boy, which is (as you can tell by all the Green Tide armies springing up) a very effective warrior. However, this is a positive thing if you want to get Troops back into the mix. I have long argued that if you want the game to revolve around Troops you have to MAKE THEM GOOD! My prediction is that guardsmen will be cheap, cheap, cheap.

Heavy weapons teams will supposedly be required to be on large bases. It is assumed there will be some sort of rule making HW Teams a single 2W entity, like a Space Marine Attack Bike. Nothing has been rumoured on this yet though.
This will certainly solve a serious problem. I predict this is right. They will invent some kind of universal rule that is the same. Along those lines I predict that Eldar heavy weapons will see a similar merging when the Eldar are re-done.

Conscripts Originally rumoured to be a Troops choice that didn’t take up a FOC slot and come with a command squad of a Commissar and three teams of Heavy Bolters. The Heavy Bolter team guns them down the conscripts if they break adding bonuses. This rumour has been refuted by several sources. Other rumours say conscripts will disappear altogether, or remain only as “naked” Platoons.
I predict that conscripts will disappear. They are a vestigial limb. If regular guardsmen are cheap, these guys will go the way of the dodo. They were a lame idea to begin with if you ask me.

Penal Battalion50 pts. 1 Custodian and 9 Penal troopers. Ld 8. Rifle and close combat weapons. Scouts, Stubborn, "Desperate". No news on what the last Special Rule may entail.
Another reason why the Conscripts will be gone.

Transports
Chimera 55 pts. 12 10 10 Tank, Amphibious, Mobile Command Vehicle. Multi-laser, hull Heavy Bolter, searchlight and smoke launchers. Options: Upgrade Multi-laser to Heavy Flamer or Heavy Bolter - free; hull Heavy Bolter to Heavy Flamer - free; Storm Bolter or Heavy Stubber +10pts, Hunter-Killer Missile +10pts, Dozer Blade +10 pts, Extra Armour +15pts, Camo Netting +20pts.

Valkyrie Skimmer. 24" move. Troops may disembark at any point in its movement, but more than 12" and they take a dangerous terrain check. Was rumoured to allow embarked troops to deploy after deep striking. Another rumour says they will be able to DS more accurately like Drop Pods. It was originally rumoured to only be a transport for Stormtroopers, but more recently it has been said it will be available to all units that have access to Chimeras.

Fast Attack
SentinelsWill be available for both Fast Attack and HS slots, with the slot determining the weapon and upgrade options, as well as special rules. Fast Attack Sentinels will retain Scout, but only have the option to be open topped.
That sucks. I really like the look of enclosed sentinels. Well, no reason they can't look that way at least.

Hellhound12 12 10 Tank, Fast. Inferno Cannon: 12" Template, S6 AP4 Heavy 1 (like the previous version but there is no roll to hit and no partials, but reaches 12").
This is my MVP pick for the imperial guard force.

Devildog12 12 10 Tank, Fast. Fusion Cannon: 24" S8 AP1 Heavy 1, Blast, Melta.
I really like this one. A Hellhound with Bite. Note that this is a Fast vehicle.

Banewolf12 12 10 Tank, Fast. Chemical Cannon: S1 AP3 Heavy 1, Template, Poison (wounds on a 2+ to targets with a Toughness stat).
I am giddy with these new tanks. These are really great. And to see them in the Fast Attack slots is really the best. It allows for more tanks. Are there any Elite tanks?

Valkyrie (possibly Valkyrie Vendetta)The “up-gunned” version of the Valkyrie is rumoured to be a Fast Attack Choice called the Vendetta. There is much speculation about this.

Heavy Support
Spearhead Sentinels Heavy Support Sentinels will supposedly lose Scout, but will be enclosed, have slightly better front armour and have options for heavy weapons such as the Plasma Cannon.

Leman Russ Can reportedly be bought as a squadron so you can get 3 for a single FOC. It is unclear if this is a true Vehicle Squadron, or a three-to-a-slot situation.

Russ’ have been rumoured to cost 150 points with increased Sponson cost, so a LR will supposedly cost 180 points with 3 HB.

They have been rumoured to come with a hull heavy bolter, smoke launchers and searchlight as standard.

Leman Russ Battle Tank14 13 10 Tank. Battle Cannon.

Leman Russ Exterminator14 13 10 Tank. Exterminator Autocannon: Heavy 4, Twin-linked.

Leman Russ Vanquisher14 13 10 Tank. Vanquisher Cannon: AP2 Heavy 1, +1D6 penetration.

Leman Russ Eradicator14 13 10 Tank. Eradicator Nova Cannon: 36" S6 AP4 Heavy 1, Large Blast, Ignores cover saves.

Leman Russ Demolisher14 13 11 Tank. Demolisher Siege Cannon.

Leman Russ Punisher14 13 11 Tank. Punisher Gatling Cannon: 24" S5 AP- Heavy 20.
Keep your eye on stuff like there. There is a slow and substantial change to 40K. It used to be about armor and AP. You will start to see more effective counters to the Horde army (that is how they will balance out that army type). You will also start to see other Horde army types with other lists, like this one-- four point guardsmen will mean you can spend 800 points and have 200 models in your force. This also jives with the "move to Apocalypse" view.
Do the math-hammer.
I may actually take some Scatter Lasers in my Eldar army.

Leman Russ Executioner14 13 11 Tank. Executioner Plasma Cannon: 36" S7 AP2 Heavy 3.

Lumbering Behemoth rule - Can choose to move 6" and fire all weapons or fire nothing and move 6" +1D6".
I really like this. I hope a lot of tanks have this. It allows them to break out of the stationary gun-platform role.

Basilisk12 10 10 Tank, Open Topped. Can be enclosed

Medusa12 10 10 Tank, Open Topped. Medusa Siege Gun: 36" S10 AP2, Ordinance 1, Large Blast. "Fortification Buster" Ammunition: 48" S10 AP1 Heavy 1, Blast, +1D6 penetration. Can be enclosed

Colossus12 10 10 Tank, Open Topped. Colossus Siege Cannon: 24-240" S6 AP3 Ordinance 1, Large Blast, Ignores cover saves. Can be enclosed

Griffon12 10 10 Tank, Open Topped. Griffon Heavy Mortar: 12-48" S6 AP4 Ordinance 1, Large Blast, can choose to re-roll deviation dice roll. Can be enclosed

Manticore12 10 10 Tank. Storm Eagle Missile: 4 only. 24-120" S10 AP4 Ordinance 1D3, Large Blast.

Deathstrike12 12 10 Tank. Deathstrike Missile: 1 only. 12"-960" S10 AP1 Ordinance, Blast (radius 1D3+3").Special Rules:
- Cannot be fired on Turn 1. Each turn roll a D6, weapon can be fired on a 6. Modifiers: +1 per turn, -1 for each crew stunned or weapon destroyed results sustained. Can always be fired on the roll of a natural 6.
- Any weapon destroyed results received are ignored, the only effect they have is to delay the launch.
- Hits on vehicles in the area of the Deathstrike Missile are not calculated at half strength but at S10.

Minis
First Wave rumoured to be as follows (US$):
IG Codex $25
IG Primaris Psyker $15
IG Ratling Snipers $20
IG Sentinel $25
IG Cadian Command Squad $25
IG Catachan Command Squad $25
IG Valkyrie $50
IG Cadian Shock Troops $22
IG Catachan Jungle Fighters $22

The green of the Commissar Lord can be seen here:
http://warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=41307&d=1214001137
New Ratlings have supposedly been spotted and have cloaks and hoods.

The new Sentinel box is rumoured to have all Heavy Weapon options including at least a Plasma Cannon, as well as the Armoured Crew Compartment bits in the box.
Thank goodness. I am not a fan of kits that do not have all the options in there.

The Cadian Command Squad Boxes will supposedly include all the special weapons in plastic (1 of each), 3 different officer heads, several different close combat weapons (Swords, Fists etc), various embellishments, 2 suits of officer armour, one more practical one more dressy, and 4 Cadians with a few new/special heads. Also said to have a “Drill Instructor style” underarm swagger stick.

The Valkyrie will be different from the FW version, but not hugely. A CAD picture of the interior can be seen here:

The Cadian and Catachan Boxes are most likely 10 man sets with a heavy weapon included. Nothing has been said about whether the box will include multiple heavy weapon options, or if individual heavy weapons sets will be withdrawn. The Catachans are rumoured to be a slight improvement in sculpt more in line with the recent Heavy Weapons team than their original incarnation and will have scaled down arms.

GGM007 has dished the following info from a Manager:

There will apparently be a Direct Only blister with the three advisors: Master of the Fleet, Master of the Watch (Artillery Officer) and Astropath.

CAD drawings of some tanks have been spotted but it is not clear if these are simply concepts or if they are in production. The CAD picture of what is thought to be the new Hellhound (the Devil Dog) can be seen here:
http://www.warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=51588&d=1233353300

Apparently the Leman Russ box will include parts to make LRBT, Demolisher, Vanquisher, and Exterminator. The Chimera box will have parts for 3 other variants (including Hellhound). The Basilisk box may come with parts for Medusas and Griffons. They don’t seem to be included in the first wave.

CAD Images of what is believed to be the Leman Russ Executioner Turret and possibly the Griffon or other Heavy Mortar can be seen here:
http://warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=52171&d=1234206422Plastic Roughriders in the Cadian style have been rumoured. They will supposedly be in the “1.5 wave”A WIP Stormtrooper with shotgun (assumed to be Plastic) has been seen. It is unclear when or if this will be released. It doesn't appear to be in the first wave, but is rumoured to be released with an “Inquisitor supplement oriented around Planetfall”.
They are supposedly 10 models to a box from £12-15. No further word on box contents. WIP can be seen here:http://warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=51084&d=1232629639

Ogryns will not be getting new models just yet

There have been rumours of Greatcoat plastics for some time, but these have been consistently shot down by those “in the know”. Despite this, it seems quite a few GW managers are reporting that plastic Greatcoats are in the pipeline, possibly even as soon as 2nd wave. They will supposedly make Steel Legion, Kreig, and/or Valhallans, which some people believe to be a sign the rumour is untrue, as the look of those regiments would need to be drastically altered to create them all from one kit.

Background & Art
The front cover of the codex supposedly features Cadians.

All Hands on Deck

.
Guess what? We're going to get to do one of those new Brass Scorpions from Forge World later this month!
.
Let's get started shall we? The last two days I've actually slept through the night. I like that. I've noticed that no matter how well things are going I find ever-smaller things to gripe about. I need to break that cycle.
.
We went to a dinner in my brother-in-law's honor on Monday (did I mention that already?) and we got home late. There's something magic about carrying sleeping kids in from the car. I can't believe we have four children. It feels like our family is complete. The two older kids were sick.
.
I have two new Artists down at the studio training. Well, that's not quite the word since both are already an accomplished, award-winning miniatures painters/artists in their own right. The first is a real geek, jumping in to quote Star Wars or Monty Python with the rest of us. So, not "training" really, but more like cross-pollinating with other artists including myself so that their style will merge with the studio style in a cohesive way.
.
I usually don't present new artists for the first three to six months. We monitor carefully for "implosion". New artists tend to crumple under the strain, and I've found it's a good bet to reinforce them with a lot of mentoring and careful follow-up. You've got to see some of their stuff. I'm going to have some pics up in the near future. I couldn't even believe the talent that came through on this round of hiring.
.
I got in sixteen vypers on a trade. I will probably be able to salvage eight or ten of them. Many are missing cockpit covers, which I would be thrilled to trade in if somebody has any, any at all. Two of them are being prepped for painting right now. I hope to have prototypes up soon. That's for the Teal Eldar.
.
Yesterday, Tamie took all the kids, dressed in Sunday best, to the dedication of the Draper Temple. I very much wanted to go, but there was absolutely no escape from my duties at the studio.

Robot Chicken Star Wars

Watch this while you can.

"Stormwing" Eldar Warhost- first wave

All right, here's what I have for the first wave, which I plan to finish this week:

2x Night Spinner
2x units of Dire Avengers
3x Vypers

Song of the Day- Rocket Ship

I heard a snippet of this in a Futurama movie: Bender's Game.

"Nanny" Tax

Here's an interesting article about Payroll Taxes. They call it the "Nanny Tax" but it's what is applied to any employee, as far as I can tell.

http://www.newsweek.com/id/183487

I am surprised that most people don't know that the employer has to match part of the tax. It works something like this: If you make $12 per hour, the employer takes out about $1.00 for "with-holding" and then has to send that as well as another $1.00 to the Feds. On top of that there are labyrinthine state taxes.

If you could choose, would you forego the benefits to Social Security etc. in order to make 12% more?

Why is the payroll tax split? Why not make the employer pay it all? Why not make the employee pay it all? It can't be an accident.

It's also interesting to see how the various parties (employer, employee and the government) spin the various portions of the tax. What do you think?

I for one, don't trust faraway bureaucrats to administer a worker's money to their best benefit. I think that in the end they will take the money, mis-use it, over-extend, and ultimately the worker will be left to fend for his-her-self in the end anyway. That's what you're going to see in the coming year: government agencies at all levels howling how the money is all gone and how people just need to stand up and take care of themselves and each other. Hmmm... sounds like paying twice to get the job done once.

Then again, I know a lot of people that wouldn't save up for retirement left to themselves. They would blow it on soda and twinkies, then have to live in a box and eat Alpo in their golden years. I mean, heck, I blew my retirement money to start a miniatures painting business. So how smart could I be? Do I need a benevolent and all-powerful government to take care of me and make me do the right thing?

It's my opinion that individuals and small communities are well-suited to taking care of themselves most efficiently. Of course, it's easy to believe this when living in such a tight-knit community as I do. We have monthly collections for the poor, that are administered carefully through a local man well-known for his integrity (and with oversight-- this is called Fast Offering*). When a woman gives birth, the local Relief Society starts bringing meals to the family. Same for if someone is sick or injured. Help with medical bills can happen, too. There are two de facto public parks. One family even built a pavilion on the edge of it. Another a basketball court. Children play there under the watchful eye of a ring of two-story houses. Yards are well-tended and planted with flowers. If you move in here, and someone notices, it won't be long until a brigade of volunteers shows up to lend a hand with the boxes. I can recite almost every family by name in a three block radius.

When we moved here, our house wasn't ready to move in to. A local family took us in. For FOUR MONTHS.

This is what is called in an LDS community a "Ward". Ours has 105 families. And we take care of each other quite well. On top of paying our Payroll taxes. I'm living in a Utopia of sorts. The main feature (invisible) is that it is voluntary. For me, that is the most important part.

Last thought: it is easier to fight and terminate local corruption than it is to fight corruption at the federal level. Where there is money there is rotten-ness. Where there is a LOT of money, there is a festering and putrid swamp of putridity. If you want to get rid of mosquitoes you have to drain the standing water.

*I realize this idea/practice is not unique to the Mormon people. In fact, I think any group of people could perform a similar function. Heck, you see this spontaneously at some game shops, where everyone bands together to help a member in need.

Homecoming

Today we went out to the airforce base to greet my brother-in-law (my wife's sister's husband) who has returned from Kuwait after just over a year.

It was really quite a spectacle; an enormous hangar with a parade row of flags, a band blaring "Sweet Home Alabama", firetrucks spewing gouts of water in long arcs over a slowly approaching plane, and then of course the real waterworks as fathers are united with wives and children.

We went to their home for a small lunch. The street was lined with flags all the way up to his front door. Talk about a hero's welcome!

I have a great deal of respect for my brother-in-law. He's such a true person, a man of high integrity.

Teal Eldar

It's past the point of no return. The Eldar are going to happen. I have in two Falcons (which will become the chassis for Night Spinners, which are in from FW) and ten Dire Avengers.
I've decided against the red/orange/white color scheme and instead it's going to be Teal (yes teal, like the ocean pic above) and White with grey and gold as accent colors, maybe working in some pale purple. The jewels are going to be a dark teal worked up to a very very light glowy color. I've got it all worked out.
.
I think the loadout is going to be something like this:
1x Autarch on Jetbike
1x Farseer
2x Dire Avengers units in Wave Serpents
12x Rangers in two units
2x various Jetbike units with Warlocks
9x Vypers
3x War Walkers
2x Night Spinners
.
I think it will be flexible, fun to play with and against.
.
I have also decided to focus more on the wargaming aspect of the blog in the coming week. So expect a lot of youtube and miniatures related stuff.
.
I'll give you all a break from my heavy-handed moralizing.

Ron Paul Fix

[I was up from 2am to 4am this morning. I managed this post-of-dubious-value. Everything in quotes is dripping with sarcasm-- and imagine an eye-roll for good measure.]

My insights: I think that most of the time people don't understand completely where Ron Paul is going. He's not very good at seeing his logic through, or creating a clarifying point that brings it all the way around. He does a much better job of this in his written materials.

For example in this case, in the question of the automobile industry, he talks about the liquidation of mal-investment. If a company goes under its assets don't just disappear. People talk like the buildings and the people are just going to evaporate in a cloud of ash. They are rather picked up by new investors, things are cleaned up and a younger, leaner, fresher company picks up the mantle without all the baggage that was there before.

I liken it to the brushfires. At some point the system has to clear itself. Preventing the fires only makes it more devastating when they finally do come. Not a perfect analagy, but you get my point.

Another thing that makes my jaw hit the floor is the idea that without banks somehow no one would be able to buy a home or a car. If the banks disappeared tomorrow everyone would be living in the woods around giant ghost towns. There are different ways around it. Without huge lines of credit, customers and products would have to find different ways to connect. I think it would make prices come down. Ron Paul makes this point with regards to the Health Care sector in his book The Revolution, that before the government stepped in hospitals had motivation to make their product affordable, and worked better directly with consumers.

Same thing with cars. If the banks evaporated tomorrow, how would you get a car. Why, you would save up and buy a reasonably priced used car. Bad for the new car lot, but proportionately good for the used car lot. The resources, the money, the consumer did not evaporate, they just moved to a different sector. A job may be lost, but another job is created.

If the banks disappeared tomorrow, completely, I would cry with joy. Oh, it would suck when I had an emergency and needed a loan. Oh, waitaminit, I need to think around the problem better. How about SAVING up first and living frugally? That's what ultimately happens when a family becomes over-extended and their credit tanks anyway.

More than half my income goes to interest and taxes. Mostly interest. I'm an idiot. Years ago, when I should have made painful decisions about my business, faced up to the pain, lived leaner, I instead went into debt to subsidize my idiot ways. The availability of easy credit prolonged the stupidity and over-spending. It's a micro-cosm of what Ron Paul is talking about. I've spent the last year working to get to a point where my income is going more into the life of my family. And slowly I'm getting there. I want to get to the maximum level of efficiency there.

By the time my mortgage is done my house will have cost at least double. I will have spent ten years "building" my house (vicariously) and another ten years getting nothing, just paying interest to someone who neither built nor labored nor finished any material product. How is that a good system? Is there a better way?

I wonder, if you took a city of 20,000 people, how much of the money that is spent on housing goes to ownership (principle) and how much goes to interest? What percentage of the homes are owned outright? Are we just squatters in the land of our forefathers? It seems to me that the banks printed a bunch of paper, bought everything, and made everyone a half-slave through usury.

The banks would have you believe that without them humanity would be doomed to live in the forests in twig huts and tents. If it weren't for them you'd have to save your whole life to buy a house. Yes, maybe you'd have to live super humbly for about ten years and buy only a modest dwelling outright. But at least it wouldn't cost double, and your kids wouldn't be indentured servants.

"Yes, without them the entire system would implode. Oh, please dear banker, save me! Provide the essentials for me! Because without you I would be totally screwed. In fact, maybe I should buy my food and clothing on credit, too!"

And what would it look like if my countrymen en masse wised up and stopped using the so-called "services" of the banks? It is after all a product and we can't be forced to use it (nevermind that this is what's happening indirectly through the bailouts-- we have to pay back a loan through taxation-- our "representatives" signing on the dotted line for the loan either from the Fed or foreigners). But back to my "no thanks to the banks" idea. What do you think that would look like? Why, the banks would howl to high heaven about how the whole system is crashing down and how everything is going to go to hell without them.

How can that possibly be? Let's not forget the nature of this entity. It is a being that by its very nature takes more than it gives back. It takes double back, I would daresay, through the "miracle" of compound interest. When I go into a bank nowadays it gives me the creeps. Every polished desk, every marble tile, represents the sweat of some working family. I feel like I am walking on the souls of the working class.

Well, back to my business. Ever since I stopped using credit of any kind, and paying up front for everything, paying as I go, things are just peachy. I reigned in my spending to super-thrifty levels. I started paying off my debts at an aggressive pace. I bought a used car with cash up front. It has brought me peace and a measure of prosperity.

Disclaimer: I am not presenting this as exactly my viewpoint. Or saying that you should accept it as yours. I think that it is worth looking at. I am a political explorer. Ron Paul's movement (a restoration of the American Revolution as he says) resounds with me. I am on the brink of building out on this and asking a new round of questions.

Looking back at my first year in College, I had to take American History 101 (or somesuch). I remember on the first day the professor came out and began pointing out all the great things that the government does, listing all sorts of government programs, and how we should be grateful. At the time I cocked my head a bit, since it seemed a little off topic. But now it makes sense-- the relationship of universities and the government.

In my opinion, colleges are agents of the banks to enslave young people through student loans.

I was watching Colbert Report and he introduced Bob Barr (the Libertarian Candidate) as "the man who wants to shrink government to the size of a postage stamp". That's not fair. If the size of goverment were rolled back to the size it was twenty years ago, it would be about half it's current size. The "postage stamp" statement skews the real issue: what is the proper role of government. Government does do some things well. This is an entirely different topic.

I have started to warm to Eric Danley's view that there are some things (like switching to more efficient green energy perhaps) that need a nation-wide solution, and are not likely to be implemented by individual businesses. I'm still puzzling this out as best I can.

Amelioration

I put on this blog pretty much what's on my mind.

My hope is that someone will be uplifted or perhaps gain some insight.

There's no way to make a blog entry so bland, so generic-brand, that every one of the hundreds who read it will agree. So, I'm not looking for that. I'm just putting down one man's perspective.

Now, I am interested in hearing constructive and relevant comments from regular readers. I don't mind putting down things that perhaps clarify or illuminate different facets.

Sometimes I'm just writing ideas, that I might not even think are right (not sure if this is the right word). If I am presenting (what I think is) an absolute, the language will reflect that.

Mawiage is what bwings us togedder today

I feel suddenly inclined to talk about marriage. I hope my comments do not come across as preachy or moralizing, but rather as a humble proffering. This is only my one perspective.

It takes careful preparation. There should be courtship and consideration. It is a matter of great seriousness because it is not just for one's self, but for the successive generations. I think it is the woman who must exercise the greatest discretion, for she is choosing the father of her children.

People do change over the long course of a good marriage, but it's not such a good idea to count on that. Take a close and objective look. Marriage isn't some doofus hipster thing that is only for the entertainment of the individual. It is the foundation of society, successive generations, and the formative years of small children.

Too much physical affection can cloud one's judgment. That is a good and wholesome part of marriage, but not everything. Perhaps likened to mortar. It's the bricks that are important. But boy that mortar sure does hold it all together. Is that right? That makes it sound like critically important
.
You've got to be practical and address the day-to-day items. How will the duties be divided? What are the practical goals? What about children and child-rearing? What are the basic rules of life?
.
My wife and I seriously curtailed the expression of physical affection during our courtship so that we could keep our heads on straight. We decided to never be alone together. We spent a lot of time at the public park and on the front steps of our homes.

Each person is different. There are many different situations. For me, I prepared for many years, and so when I found the right woman (or a right woman) it was only nineteen days from first date to proposal. But I wouldn't necessarily recommend that for everyone. It's a tough call. I'd say there's only like a one in hundred chance of any two people being really compatible for a long-term marriage. You can beat those odds by dating a hundred people and keeping careful track of what you liked and didn't like about each one. This doesn't have to be hot and heavy for each date-ee. It can be a brief and friendly relationship, perhaps even without any romantic tones. Just a chance to get to know someone.
.
I definitely recommend making a list of "must haves" and a list of "dealbreakers". That your future spouse have the same fundamental beliefs is a must. People think that love conquers all, but be careful, things that don't seem important while gallavanting around town like two star-crossed lovers are of critical importance at 2am when the baby is crying.
.
Then, of course, there's the time to just quit your hem-hawing and just do it. There's never a perfect time.
.
The piece of paper does matter. Sometimes the die-hard commitment is what sees it through when times are bad.
.
I remember being afraid of marriage for a while. I had heard how bad it was. That it was some kind of ordeal. My experience has been the exact opposite. Sure, there's some arguments and bickering, but the general undercurrent is very pleasing.
.
I was greatly, immensely benefited by being LDS and following that formula before and after getting married. A "Mormon" wedding in a temple is short, sweet, and uncomplicated. It is extremely quiet. Two people kneel across an altar and clasp hands. I think it's about ten minutes for the whole thing. I loved it.
.
Also, it never hurts to talk to your parents. They might know a thing or two about it. Or maybe not. But at least listen.
.
There is a gracious and kind God in Heaven. Anyone can call on Him for help and enlightenment. Most certainly in the all-important issue of creating a happy, stable and lasting marriage.

Lonely Thursday

Pic: a Luna Wolf space marine. We're doing an enormous army of these. It's a great color scheme.
.
Today was surreal. I got up at 1:30am, spark awake, and stayed up until about 3:00am. This can't be healthy. My seven year old son didn't have any clean school clothes. But we found some at last. He's got a lot of book smarts, but not a lot of common sense. He's got good intuition when it comes to math-- he logics things out neatly. Like his dad.
.
I got to spend some time with him, though, driving him to school. I like to spend time with my kids.
.
I was alone at the studio most of today. Thursdays are a sort of Bermuda Triangle. Not many people. I've got a new guy back in assembly helping out for this week. He plays Magic, so we started a four-way tournament just for kicks.
.
I got a lot done, though. When people are around I lag because I want to shoot the bull and chat everyone up as they pass by. No one escapes the "cheerful greeting".
.
Baby is healthy and pink and making cute baby noises, approximating speech in a way. She is starting to track us with her eyes. She's happy and calm. I can't imagine what it's like to take a newborn to daycare. Is there even such a thing? I'd live in a one-bedroom apartment with all six of us before making Tamie go work while the kids are institutionalized. Har. Well, I guess the older kids go to school!
.
Some stuff for my Eldar came in. And Vypers are en route. It's going to be fun. I'm still mulling all sorts of color schemes.
.
I am still booking projects for February. There are still two slots open. Two sweet slots!
.
What else?
.
The weather warmed up today. It melted about half of the massive sheets of ice that form a stubborn lattice over the entire city.

Eldar Jetbike Advice

Shawn,

As you know, I am a fan of the Eldar as well. And I have to say
that Jetbikes are a viable troops choice to be certain. In fact, I
rarely ever play a game that doesn't have some element of a "Speed is
Life" style (Dire Avengers in Serpents, or Jetbike squadrons).

As to whether or not they will fit in your army...that depends. I
will try to offer my insights and then, coupled with your own
experiences, you can make an informed decision.

In my experience, jetbikes cannot go racing up the middle of the
board. EVER. Just because they have better toughness and armor than a
regular guardian does not mean you should use them as shock troops. Be
prepared t osacrifice a turn (or two) of fire to maneuver into position.
This was a lesson that took me a while to really use. And I still fall
into the "Shoot Every Turn" trap.

At the very minimum, I take 4 Jetbikes in a squadron: 2 'regular'
bikers, a shuriken cannon biker, and a warlock. With the new edition,
conceal is a waste (your armor is better, and there's turbo boosting if
you really need it). I tend to go with Embolden. This means you are
more likely to pass morale checks for casualties, and will make taking a
wound less catastrophic (You are taking a test every time someone
crashes).

As you go up in numbers, you can substitute powers for the warlock
(though Embolden is always a good default). Destructor can be a big
surprise for your opponent when you drop a heavy flamer equivalent in
their laps. And enhance can really turn the tide if you decide to
assault (Not recommended, but has been useful for me in the past. I
still think conceal is bogus on jetbikes.

I tend to go with 6 jetbikes + warlock, or 9 jetbikes + warlock,
depending on the rest of my force. I tend to bring a jetbike farseer
and either another farseer on jetbike, or an autarch on jetbike. The
Farseer allowing re-roll saves, and dooming a target squad is brutal
(could you imagine if Guide increased BS instead of re-rolls?. OUCH!).

Based on the list you have in your blog, I would keep the night
spinners hidden (obviously) Put the dire avengers in wave serpents, get
a jetbike farseer, and fill up your troops slots with jetbikes. I would
kit out my war walkers with multi-shot weapons (Scatter lasers are a
favorite, but I tend to equip mine with Scatter laser/Starcannon) and
have them outflank your opponent. (And get juicy side armor) Vypers
should have long range weapons or high rate of fire weapons (the dual
shuri-cannon load isn't as effective anymore) So I would go with
missile launchers for range (and the blast not almost guaranteed to hit
SOMETHING) or shuriken cannon to keep em cheap. (Speaking of: I had an
idea for a vyper with an underslung turret. Take the Shuri-cannon
turret from a wave serpent/falcon and mounting it underneath the vyper
(where the normal turret goes. Would it fit?)

I hope this helped a little bit, and that I didn't tell you
something you already know. :)

Here's a follow up:
The 60mm base only becomes a problem in urban fights. I tend to have the bikes at various altitudes to allow them to bunch up (Thanks for the doweling btw) and it allows for a much larger spread when your opponent is 'shooting through' your unit. (though I'm not sure how reliable that might be with "True Line of Sight" and its interpretations). Deployment can be a problem, but after you get to move, you should be ok. Plus, under the new 5th ed rules, you can choose which units are in reserve (re-read the missions and the reserve rules and you'll see it) So coming in from the table sides can be a devastating tactic (especially shuriken cannons into tasty side armor)

From my understanding, in 5th ed, turbo-boosting bikes give a cover save instead of invulnerable. So if you are turbo boosting, your cover save is better than conceal, if you are not your armor save is better than conceal. And if you are trying to avoid lascannons, plasma guns, and other high AP weapons, using 'real' cover will likely be more readily available and offer a better save than conceal. I would spend my points elsewhere.

Jetbikes in 5th edition are great for the last minute objective snatching. They are more maneuverable in avoiding assaults and putting fire on specific targets (Isolate and destroy). With outflank and their outright speed they can be pretty good at getting to softer targets. A lot of my opinions are based on theoryhammer because I have only played a small number of games since 5th ed.

Let me know what you find out.

Daemonhunters and Eldar

We made a Forge World order yesterday. It was a personal thing, not so much for the studio. Renn picked up some Death Korps mortars to round out his army, and I picked up a few Night Spinners.
I also ordered a Lord Hexeris, just because that model is so cool. I have a massive Grey Knights army coming in, which we are going to refurbish and upgrade, and I thought he would make a great HQ for that. Here's what's in it:

GKT Hero with storm bolter 1
GKT Hero with psycannon 1
GKT with psycannons 4
GKT BC with psycannons 4
GKT with incinerator 1
GKT with TH+SS 1
GKT with storm bolters 12
GK with psycannons 8
GK with incinerators 5
GK with stormbolters 55
GK Justicars 8

Inquisitor with psycannon 1
Inquisitor Cortez with retinue 1
Eversor assassin 1
death cult assassins 3

Dreadnought with various arms 3
CC Dreadnought with AC 1
As you can see this isn't a small army. It's a lot of Grey Knights. Anyway, you can look forward to that as a studio project. If anyone is interested, send out a line now.
OK, let's talk about Eldar. This will be like my sixth army of Eldar since starting 40K in 1996. I am still really torn about what to field in it. Eldar have so many great units: evocative, colorful, interesting, and deadly.
I'm not so interested in what is good. I want modelling opportunities and an army that is both fun to play and a challenge to play against. Here's what I have incoming soon:
6x grav tanks of various types
2x Night Spinner turrets
9x Vypers (got some great conversion ideas for these)
2x units of Dire Avengers
What else should I get?
Definitely going to put in a unit of three War Walkers. I've wanted for some time now to try fielding NINE of them in an army. Just to see how a marine army takes 36 star cannons shots in a turn.
My big problem is what to use as Troops choices. I really like Jetbikes. With a Warlock are they any good?
In other news: a rare and coveted Painter slot has opened up at the studio. I've interviewed about twenty people this week. It's grueling. But that doesn't mean I don't like it. It's great to meet new people and I am absolutely blown away by the level of talent that is showing up. It's agonizing to narrow it down. I should have it settled in about a week. But you will all not meet the new artist until 3-6 months from now.
The time involved with this process is what has kept me from both blog and youtube this week.
I still have a few slots open for February.

Terminal Case of Ticks

When I was in South America I saw something that made my heart break.
Stray dogs would get infested with ticks. Whole carpets of them that would breed on them until they formed bulbous grey patches of them all over their bodies. I was told that eventually the dog would lay down and die.
The problem is that they creatures take and take from their host, and unless something is done to remove them, the poor dog will grow ever weaker.
The only solution is a whole body tick-removal bath.
You will not even believe how out of control some of this stuff is.

Drowsy Morning

Here is the song that is stuck in my head this morning.

I woke up naturally bright and early, around 7am. All right, it's bright, but not early. As usual, I had like ten clear thoughts in my head, which I jotted down and should be the subject of a future post.

My daughter is sick today. She shambled out and announced as much then proceeded to coccoon herself on the couch with a giant bowl of generic brand Lucky Charms at hand. We're watching Batman cartoons.

I played a few games of Magic with my son. That game is never going away now, if for no other reason that it gives bonding time for he and I. He is about 1.5 grades ahead in all his subjects. He is so smart and thoughtful. He is getting good. He beats me fairly often. Of course, half of Magic is deck building and my decks are really sub-standard.

My wife is puttering around in her pale-blue bath-robe making bacon-potato soup.
