Building a Temple, Building a Road

A Zen Story

Gessen was an artist monk. Before he would start a drawing or painting he always insisted upon being paid in advance, and his fees were high. He was known as the "Stingy Artist."
A geisha once gave him a commission for a painting. "How much can you pay?" inquired Gessen.
"'Whatever you charge," replied the girl, "but I want you to do the work in front of me."
So on a certain day Gessen was called by the geisha. She was holding a feast for her patron.
Gessen with fine brush work did the paining. When it was completed he asked the highest sum of his time.
He received his pay. Then the geisha turned to her patron saying: "All this artist wants is money. His paintings are fine but his mind is dirty; money has caused it to become muddy. Drawn by such a filthy mind, his work is not fit to exhibit. It is just about good enough for one of my petticoats."
Removing her skirt, she then asked Gessen to do another picture on the back of her petticoat.
"How much will you pay?" asked Gessen.
"Oh, any amount," answered the girl.
Gessen named a fancy price, painted the picture in the manner requested, and went away.

It was learned later that Gessen had these reasons for desiring money:
A ravaging famine often visited his province. The rich would not help the poor, so Gessen had a secret warehouse, unknown to anyone, which he kept filled with grain, prepared for these emergencies.
From his village to the National Shrine the road was in very poor condition and many travelers suffered while traversing it. He desired to build a better road.
His teacher had passed away without realizing his wish to build a temple, and Gessen wished to complete this temple for him.
After Gessen had accomplished his three wishes he threw away his brushes and artist's materials and, retiring to the mountains, never painted again.

A Guide to help you find your way

I am a seasoned veteran of the miniatures painting industry.  I built by far the largest and best-known studio in the world from my garage operation.  I have great enthusiasm and insight.  I've been in the jungle for nine years.  So what am I doing right?

I'm only taking two clients for the month of February, 2014.  The price is not for me, it's for you.  You will get value where you place value.  I want to find a student who will take it seriously.

Business Consultation with Shawn

Initial Consultation no charge no obligation
Five Hours $750
Ten Hours $1150

Alternatively, you can go $500 per month for six months and I'll be open on an as-needed basis to help you get set up.

I will give you all the insight and information that I can, based on your questions.  I am extremely creative.  I am very good with numbers.  This will be by Skype or by phone.

The time is not all in one shot, I will guide you through the process.  For the ten-hour package, if you choose business setup as your topic I will take you through all the various stages and topics of getting set up.

This is not one giant session.  I will guide you through, helping you with obstacles as they come up.

Personal Visit
Or... Come out to Utah and be my companion.  You will see my life and be able to get new ideas.  I will explain the ropes of how to get a business started as well as point out potential pitfalls.  This is meant to be a life-enriching experience.

This could be compared to an intensive college course.  Tuition.
Three Days $1600
Five Days $2500

Either way, you and I will tailor the visit to what you are interested in.  It could be business-oriented, or more about getting insights into life, or wargame oriented (playing batreps, learning to paint, etc.)

My Credentials
I have pioneered the miniatures painting industry, having survived nine years in the savage jungle.  I built it up from my garage.  I know the way step by step.  Solid know-how is a must when getting started.

Contact me at 801 372 7661 or to set it up or ask questions.

Why am I doing this?
First, I believe that my counsel is incredibly valuable.  Especially if someone is doing something in the wargaming industry.  I want to benefit others with my experience.  You can lose tens of thousands dollars in business just by not knowing what you're doing.

Second, I want to make improvements to my home.  I want to provide an excellent and amazing life for my wife and kids.  This is what I have to offer to make money.  It is right.  I am offering part of myself, my time and talents, to better the life of another human and in turn my life will be better.

Testimonial from Ryan
"I have had a tremendous experience working with Shawn.  At the age of 31, with a family to care for and with school finished, I was basically unsure of what to do with my career.  All paths seemed to lead to a life of monotony.  I decided to talk with Shawn because he seemed to actually be living a dream.  As a result of our discussions, I have found a way to make my mind up about what it is I want.  And I'm not afraid to go after it!  I'm no longer worried about what is realistic or what anyone says I can achieve.  I have been feeling happier and less stressed from day to day.  I feel better about myself and about the future of my family.  I would recommend Shawn's "Life Mentoring" for anyone who is appalled at the idea of settling for a bleak future and who is ready to break from convention and live life to the fullest.  Thank you Shawn!"

 Testimonial from Troy N.
"Speaking with Shawn was a breath of fresh air. Pleasant, highly motivated and very intelligent. Shawn's enthusiasm and his ability to explain his ideas in a clear and concise fashion was inspiring. I look forward to not only implementing some of his suggestions but also later in coming back and taking full advantage of his mentoring and experience - a true joy to talk to."

Testimonial by J. Shore
I had my first session with Shawn yesterday and it went extremely well. Skype did not work so well for us so we continued our conversation via phone and we talked for about an hour about different things ranging from what a normal day was like in the life of Shawn to how Shawn wakes up each day and how he goes about managing and running his business.

I got a great idea of how to manage a miniatures painting business and began to understand how much time and effort must be put in to work. Whether or not it is something that you love it was good to get perspective on how Shawn handled his daily routine and how the different influences such as his kids and his wife play an important role in the way that he goes through his day.

It was really good to hear the different techniques that Shawn uses to conduct himself in day to day activities and how keeping a positive mindset is the key to having a positive day. As well as understanding the different techniques that Shawn uses, I also received some advice on what i should personally do. It was" very refreshing to hear a different perspective on the way that Shawn thinks about things and the way i have normally thought about them.

I will take the advice that Shawn has given me and use it to the best of my knowledge but I look forward to learning more about the business aspect of running a miniatures painting company. Overall, the advice and knowledge that I have gained from Shawn has given me time to reflect and understand how my way of doing things might not always be the best and that i need to work on understanding myself and what i want to do before I continue in the direction of either college or starting my own miniatures painting company; i look forward to talking with Shawn again in the future as his advice was very helpful in a plethora of different ways.

I want to take the time and thank you for helping me with my company.  Granted, it was off the topic of gaming, but you gave me some great exercises to try out.  My goal was to get a different point of view and that is exactly what I got.  I really appreciate you taking the time to help me.  I hope your convention went well.  Keep up the good work!!!
