Testimonial: Blood Angels (Death from Above Special)

Shawn,

Just wanted to take a moment to compliment you all on the work you've done for me. The Blood Angels have just arrived, and, as I'm sure you've heard before look much better in person than they did in the gallery. I felt like a kid on Christmas as I was opening up the box and carefully unwrapping the figs.

I've got to say I was a little disappointed when I unwrapped the last one because I was having too much fun with the whole process...
You all do great work. I couldn't be more pleased. I will definitely be in touch for a future project, and I'll be keeping an eye on the blog to take advantage of some future specials I'm sure.

Thanks again,

AS

PS from Shawn- I am still running the Death from Above special

Brontops Needed

I'm on the hunt for four Brontops Riders (of any kind) from Confrontation. I mainly need the creature itself. I don't need the cards.

I am using them in an extra special-secret project.

This gave me a larf this morning

I just loooove Craig F.

Warcasters Needed

I'm looking for locals with painted War Machine or Hordes armies to play casual and exposition games. Any experience level is OK. But your army needs to be painted or mostly painted.

We will trade goods/services for painting if you need that.

Soft Flannel Pajamas

Get your babies painted. Softly. Relaxingly. Get them painted now.

One night, I was walking home from work and it started raining. By the time I got home I was soaking wet. Mom had just done a load of laundry and I changed into some warm pajamas. Then I made some hot cocoa with little marshallows. I like lots in mine! They softly and relaxingly melted in the cup as I was watching an episode of Star Trek: the Next Generation. It was the one where Picard gets his mind beamed onto an alien probe and he lives out a separate life.

Now, visualize. A box arrives in the mail. The label says Blue Table Painting. You open the box and find your army, each miniature like a work of art packed lovingly with care inside. Now you are playing a game with your best friend. You are laughing and having a good time. You take a long pull of your favorite drink.

Get your army painted by Blue Table Painting today! It will take away your pain and give you pleasure.

PS- I got an email about effective marketing this morning. As a larf I wrote this post out loud with the rest of the staff. Did it work?

Jammies

My wife and I have put a moratorium on media on Sunday mornings. No computer, no video games. We eat breakfast together. I sat in the living room and read some books (War Machine!) and paced back and forth on the front porch.

Then off to church. My wife was still making rolls for a family dinner so I had to leave with three of the kids. I spent most of the time in the hall with one or more of the children, so not much listening to talks or such, but I did leave recharged as usual.

Sunday afternoon we headed up to South Jordan to have dinner at the very well-appointed Transitional Home where Tamie's father is recovering from spinal surgery. He was doing well. And it's a sorry state when "well" is "strapped to a wheelchair". All the daughters brought something for a potluck, meat and potatoes type stuff.

Once home I changed into a pajama-clad potato lounging at the side of the bed watching some Red Dwarf.

Toxic Ratmen's Foul Howitzer

Check out this little jewel from off eBay.

And this cute little wonder.

Charity Drive

Just picked up this line on Bell of Lost Souls for a charity drive. I plan on doing something about it.

My Warcaster: Adeptus Rahn

I found this great article on strategies for this warcaster.

The rest of my Retribution army will be in on Monday, and after my game with Mike Dunn today I have a much firmer grasp of how to maneuver in the game. In each of the army lists I don't see any models that are patently not very good. There is a lot of synergy in this game.

I can't wait to play my next game of War Machine!

In other news, I've got a Warhammer Fantasy batrep lined up for Monday! Skaven vs High Elves.

Some Thoughts on 8th Edition

I heard from a friend of mine from sunny CA today. He's an old veteran of Warhammer Fantasy. In fact, his Orcs are one of the first armies I painted on commission. Here's what he had to say about 8th Ed.

8th Ed: Having gotten over my initial gag response upon hearing that many of the rumors were true, and played a few games with them, here are some of my thoughts:

Warhammer used to be a game in which savvy players won (and lost) in the movement phase. It was a game of maneuver and timing. Not so much anymore. The main factors which contribute to the change are 3 fold:

1) Random charge distances. Everything charges it's base movement characteristic +2D6 (or 3D6 pick the highest 2 for some things). This obviously introduces a great deal of uncertainty. I'm not certain why this change was made. IMO, there was nothing wrong with the old system (if it ain't broke...) and this merely serves to make getting into combat more a function of luck rather than experience and skill. I dislike this change.

2) Strict Initiative Order: Once you manage to get into combat with aforementioned random movement, order of attack is determined soley by the Initiative characteristic. Charging only grants a +1 to combat resolution. The art of setting up elaborate feinted flights and counter charges is, for the most part, irrelevant.

3) The Step-up rule: No matter how many casualties you inflict on the enemy, if there are still models left in the unit to attack, they do. For the most part, killing things no longer effects the number of models which get to fight in close combat until you slay enough to diminish back ranks such that you are removing models from a fighting rank.

Combined, these 3 factors makes combat much more predictable based on statlines than it was before. Ie, games will be determined by army composition/matchups much more than they used to be in 7th Ed. Where before, you could deny many frightening units the opportunity to bring their combat umph to bear by settling up elegant traps in the movement phase/charge phase, 8th makes this exceedingly difficult, if not impossible.

There are a number of other changes that contribute as well. Most everything now fights in 2 ranks (it's front rank as normal, plus a max of 1 attack per model in the second rank). This has the effect of increasing the number of dice rolled in the close combat phase considerably. A basic rule of statistics: as you increase the pool, the more likely the result will fall close to the average. Mathhammer has become more accurate.

The ability to redirect the enemy is for the most part gone. One of the most useful tools in 7th in a general's kit was the ability to turn the enemy's flank with say a unit of fast cavalry or Great Eagle or such. Now, when a unit is destroyed in close combat, the winner may elect to reform instead of overrunning.

All missile units can shoot in 2 ranks. Bows of all sorts have the Volley rule, which has to effect of increasing the number of ranks which can shoot beyond 2 ranks depending on the depth of the unit. Additionally, there are no more guessed ranges for artillery. You simply put the template wherever you like it and roll the scatter dice as appropriate. Combined, I feel these two changes will serves to 40K-ize Fantasy for some armies. Where before, practical limitations of frontage and line of sight limited the number of missile units one played, and some skill was required to accurately employ a Stone Thrower or Cannon, now you can easily double the number of guns and the devastation wrought by artillery is largely determined by chance alone. I suspect lists with 50+ Thunderers and 100 + Glade Guard will not be unheard of in the near future...

Which brings me to the last of my main grievances: True Line of Sight. It's official, and it's just absurd. The game effect is that nothing, not even forests, block line of sight anymore, with the possible exception of buildings. It also makes conversion work affect game mechanics... which is just silly. For example, you put your lovely Dragon on a scenic rocky base, increasing his height by a couple inches, granting yonder Wizard clear line of sight to him despite his cringing in fear behind a (slightly shorter) tower, which might have afforded him protection from incoming magic missiles had you not taken artistic license with his base...

Magic now works very differently, and I'm actually a fan of the changes here. Power dice are determined by a roll of 2D6, with the enemy dispel pool being the higher of the two dice rolled. Wizards add their level to the casting value of any spell they cast, and any Wizard can roll up to 6 dice to cast any spell, regardless of level. Irresistible force and miscasting are now one and the same: when 2 or more sixes are rolled in a casting attempt, the spell goes off irresistibly AND you roll on the Loss of Control table, which is significantly more terrifying than the 7th Ed miscast table. The basic Lores of Magic in the main rule book are all playable, which is nice. Some of the effect are very powerful indeed, but have casting values in the high teens to mid twenties, risking devastating Loss of Control result in their attempt. Each lore also has a static special ability specific to it's own flavor. For example, the lore of Life allows you to heal 1 wound on a model within 12" when you successfully cast any of it's spells. The Lore of Death generates addition power dice when you slay models with one of it's spells. Lore of fire spells get easier to cast if you continue to blast the same unit (stoking the fires) and so forth. This adds a nice bit of character to this phase of the game that I enjoy.

Terrain rules are also an improvement IMO. It doesn't usually slow unit's down, but if you march through it, the unit takes difficult terrain tests (rolling a D6 for each model, taking casualties for each 1 rolled). There are also many varieties of each terrain feature, the exact phenotype determined when a unit enters it for the first time in the game, all with different effect. There are nice enchanted woodlands with beneficial effects, and spite filled and twisted forests that will try to eat you (Fangorn!). Again, an interesting bit of flavor that I enjoy.

There are lots of other changes, but those are the big ones that spring to mind after my first couple games.

Cheers,

DW

Hammer Time

The Imperial Guard lot has some items sold today. Over half is still left. The Leman Russi, Valks, and Sentinels are all sold. That leaves the two huge lots of Infantry and about six tanks.

Still got the Bone Knights Space Marines army which is extravagant: 2100 pts of good-looking-good-playing models for $1050. Free ship in US.

We made a prototype of a true-scale marine yesterday, hope to get that on a vid soon. This is a simple version that looks good, but won't bust the bank to make it.

Didn't record D&D last night. It was one of the most intense sessions to date.

Listening to Devo's new album. So good.

This Saturday we'll be doing a War Machine battle report. It's going to be different. I was hoping to play my Retribution of Scyrah army (getting it fully ready in like 48 hours!) but the heavy warjacks were backordered which pretty much blew the list. I got them ordered from another source, but they won't be in until Monday. So I'll be playing the Menoth army (which is for sale by the by) against Mike D.'s Khador. All painted up real nice with some primo terrain. That's good stuff.

We'll be doing our Warhammer Fantasy 8th Edition Batrep on Monday!

Remember all Batreps take a few days to get them up.

The big news is that I'm taking a three month hiatus from all things political. I need to recuperate and recharge.

Update on Batrep

My opponent for a game of Warhammer Fantasy is supposed to be in today (by now!). But it occurred to me that we don't have the 8th ed. rulebook, so we're probably going to do War Machine or 40K. Don't know which yet.

Remember, I'm booking projects for July and August now.

Close Call

I left work early yesterday to hit the bricks and go door to door campaigning for Mike Lee. It was hot and grueling, but my lovely wife stuck it through with me until the final hour before the polls closed.

Here's the story in brief. In early 2008 I realized that the federal government thought it owned me; that they can dispense with my money and my life as they see fit, and send inquisitors (IRS "examiners") any time they wanted to dig through my records and possessions without probable cause or a warrant. I think everyone knows my view on this topic in general.

On top of that, there is a stack of federal law that is growing ever-thicker. It would take two college educations just to read and understand the 25,000 pages. I live in fear of that stack. I'm convinced that any given person, if agents dug hard enough, could be put away for something in there.

I'm not a happy camper. I'd be ashamed to meet one of the Founders and have him (or her) see the yoke around my neck.

So, I started reading. A lot of reading. After twelve thousand pages, I realized that reading about politics wasn't enough, I would have to read about monetary policy. Three thousand pages later I knew about a hill of beans. I still have a long ways to go. Notwithstanding, I benefited greatly from that.

I went to a Mike Lee rally very early this year and there I learned about the Caucus system in Utah. I was impressed with Mike because he talked about almost nothing except the Constitution and knew it inside and out. I thought "here's a guy who will keep his oath of office". He had me at "constitutionally limited government".

I ran for Precinct Chair in my neighborhood and won. Well, it wasn't hard. I beat the street in the rain for a couple of hours the night before handing out flyers. There were only two people in our forty-person caucus running for three Delegate positions. And only forty people showed up out of around 1500 in the precinct. Basically, I got someone willing to nominate me to raise their hand, then I gave a little speech. My only issue: national debt.

I have documented on this blog already how I ran around the county to listen and take notes for every candidate who skirted into range. I couldn't lose in a way. I looked for a candidate better than Mike Lee, but didn't find one. It was very, very important to me as a delegate to be neutral and hire the best person for the job. I looked at candidates mostly in terms of "will this person reduce or expand the government and if so by how much?" As you know, I think the federal budget should be less than a fifth of its current size and with zero debt and zero deficit and all transactions paid with commodity-backed currency. That's a strong nation!

I went to county and state convention. I've got some vids up of that (or will have some up soon) at www.youtube.com/gatelymusings That's an article unto itself. After state convention I started campaigning for Mike Lee (as a private citizen, a regular joe). On election day we really hit the bricks in the blazing sun. I think that was the most effective thing. I was surprised to find so many apathetic voters-- didn't even know it was the day. Well, I guess that was me for 39 years.

That brings us to last night. My wife and I went to the Mike Lee victory/defeat party where the nail-bitingly close results were posted every few minutes as the precincts reported in. It was really close, right around 51% to 49% the entire night, but in the end Mike Lee "The Champion of Liberty" came out ahead. I got it all on tape.

For those of you following this afar, you really must appreciate what happened here. A constitutionalist, classic Jeffersonian-type conservative came out over the neo-conservative Bush-era establishment. Mike Lee didn't just defeat his opponent, but he defeated an out of touch old-guard in a conservative state (Bob Bennett). Not just once, but twice because Bennett tried to be a king-maker by endorsing Tim Bridgewater. Mike's opponent got endorsements from the third AND fourth place candidates. So, to my mind, Mike defeated three opponents at once.

There's a saying attributed to Edmund Burke (but more likely an excerpt from War and Peace): All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing. That means you need to do something. Anything. I've started with that.

Quite frankly, I think I'm going to take a three month break from anything remotely political. Then it's back in the fight!

Skaven vs Orcs

I'm playing 2500 pts Skaven vs Mike Dunn's Orcs and Goblins this Thursday. This event will be televised.

If anyone cares to do so, it would be keen to get some thumbs up on the Miniwargaming site. And maybe a few kind words.

Barely Human Slimeball

Isn't that a beautiful rock?

I cooked breakfast this morning and got to church (uplifting as always). I made a mass of steaming food for the family: bacon, scrambled eggs, hashed browns and red plums.

I spent the afternoon in a state of bliss: in bed in my shorts watching Red Dwarf. I'm on my third time through (maybe fourth) and I now own the series. I'm on season VI.

I've been reading through the Retribution of Scyrah book. I can't get enough of them, what a cool army! I also have a few old modules and the three Monster Manuals. I've been a useless lump all day.

Tamie is back up in Salt Lake taking care of her ailing father. Nothing like spinal surgery to ruin your day. He's in really bad shape, barely able to sit down or stand up after two days flat. For the prayerful, please lend your faith to his recovery.

PS- actually, I did do something worthwhile. I tackled a task my wife has wanted for a while; I replaced two toilet seats with new ones. Nasty business, that.

Sprung

The last few days, Tamie has been up in Salt Lake at the hospital. Her father had back surgery and she stayed the night at the hospital. This left me with the kids at home, doing double-duty. I was quite grumpy about it, when I should have been gracious.

While at home with the kids I caught up on my Inbox, so as of Saturday night that was all sewed up. Sales are a bit flat which has me stressed out.

Willow has been an absolute Fussbudget Crankypants the last few days, probably because her routine was disrupted: Dad and babysitters, but where's Mommy? She is starting to articulate double-syllable pre-speech. Tuh-tu = Turtle. Pah-pie = Pot Pie. That sort of thing. Her high chair is near the turtle's aquarium and she is absolutely fascinated by that creature. The next door neighbors have a small dog in the front yard and she trundles on over there whenever she can. The dog jumps on her and licks her face causing her to shriek with delight. She is quite a snuggly wonder. I just love to hold her and go for walks with her.

I have been canvassing for Mike Lee when possible. I have a lot of thoughts about the current Senate race in Utah, but I'm pretty exhausted mentally. I may take a sabbatical from politics until the end of 2010 after this, one way or another.

I am looking forward to this blessed Sunday. My mind and heart are heavy with worry.

Tyranids Testimonial

Shawn,

Sorry I haven't written you sooner! The Tyranid army you painted for me looks amazing on the battlefield. The conversions are awesome and the paint scheme is definitely better than anything I had rattling around in my head. This really is a dream army for me and the perfect thing for me to use to get back into the 40k scene. Also, I'd just like to say I really appreciate the cordial replies to any and all inquiries I had during the project - it was nice to be kept in the loop. Finally, I just wanted to say that I did not expect you to upgrade me to the 1520 case at no additional cost when it turned out the army wouldn't fit in the original case, and that I really appreciate that. Beyond the great product provided that act alone will keep me coming back to BTP for my future 40k needs.

Taking Aim

The last few days have been terrible. I left the office quite early on Thursday, not feeling so well. Something has sent my body into toxic shock. I was spraying sulphuric yellow acid. I was unconscious for nearly twelve hours straight Thursday afternoon. As I lay in bed, eyes half open looking out the window, a storm front moved in, screeching past the window.

Sales have been flat for two days. Almost zero. That's like a little heart attack for a small business like mine.

Sometimes the pressure and stress are so much. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. It occurred to me that I've been working and pressing at maximum effort for nearly ten years now without respite. Sometimes I just want to hole up downstairs for a month and play Starcraft II.

Friday I felt a lot better and got down to work, but I just collapsed right after getting home. It rained all night. This morning I got up and paced back and forth on the sidewalk out in front of my house, sky overcast, ground wet. I feel completely cleaned out. Like my body and mind and soul have had a "good cry".

Today I'll be working, making sure everything is caught up with webwork. I hope to make some more audio for youtube. I am currently booking projects for July.

Aaaaand I'm done whining. Time to "nut up" and get the job done!

Game of Inches

Ho Hum

I'm just sitting here twiddling my thumbs waiting for your call or email. I need to get some projects set up!

I've got all my usual specials running.

Remember, I have two armies on hand ready for ship: Bone Knights (2100 pts, $1050) and Deathguard (2000 pts, $1250). I will soon have a Skaven army, Protectorate of Menoth army, and a Death Korps army. Every last one exquisite. If you buy one in the next 24 hours you get $100 off.

Nullification

Small Business and Debt

Here's part of a newsletter I got from Dave Ramsey (financials guy). I have seen both sides of this equation. I built my business "on the cheap" from the ground up. I bought many of the chairs in the office for $1.00 each from a corporate auction.

Myths and Truths About Small Business Debt
You may think you need to borrow money to start your business or cover cash flow fluctuations. The truth is, most businesses are started with less than $5,000, and you can predict and plan for cash flow fluctuations.

You may think you need a credit card to make online purchases, to pay for travel, or to help you keep track of your expenses. The truth is, a debit card is all you need to make online purchases and travel arrangements, and a simple accounting system will track your expenses without charging you 18% interest.

But what about large equipment or real estate purchases? You have to have debt for those, right?

Actually, there are four ways to avoid debt for large purchases, and Dave has done them all:

  • Rent until you can pay for it. Dave rented his building for years until he saved enough to pay cash for it. It wasn't always easy to walk past the loose brick on the sidewalk or stare at the ugly brass in the elevators, but he just used that as motivation to buy (and remodel) it as soon as possible.
  • Outsource it. Dave isn't in the printing business, so he's never invested in expensive printing equipment. He outsources his projects and keeps costs down.
  • Buy used (and ugly). Dave bought some ugly used furniture from a company that went bankrupt. Why were they bankrupt? They had debt because they bought furniture they couldn't afford.
  • Pay cash. Save systematically until you can pay cash.

Gately Retirement Plan

My retirement plan is to die on the tractor. Work until the day I die. Doing something. To hell with investments and interest. What a crock. I prefer hard assets and commodities. Check me in twenty years to see if I'm crying.

Here's a few fun vids that might perk you up.

For those that may be interested, I had a delightsome Sunday. Church was uplifiting and seemed to be tailor-made to just what I needed to hear. I took a walk with my lovely wife in the sultry summer evening, with our sweet Willow in her sherbert-striped hairbow. My wife and I are in charge of our block for earthquake preparedness and we're having a stake-wide drill this coming Saturday. Turns out Tamara is completely prepared with all sorts of kits so we can survive two weeks without any services, basically living in the rubble.

I have taken an interest in lawn-care recently, but I realized today that my front lawn is probably beyond hope and just needs to get ripped out and re-sodded. If not, I'll just keep picking away at it. Might take a few years.

Slave Lords

Hey, I'm looking for these four modules (old D&D modules A1-A4). Anyone want stuff, service or cash for them?

And some other classics:
Tomb of Horrors
Palace of the Silver Princess
Dwellers of the Forbidden City
White Plume Mountain
Desert of Desolation series (I1-4)

other stuff like that

Fire Prisms are IN

Got in nine Fire Prisms today. I did a Christmas vid, but it didn't take on the camera. We're working on the first Quad prototype for the Oceanic Eldar.

Nummy Naomi

I think I'm in love with Naomi Klein.... 's coherent presentation of ideas. I bothered to read the Shock Doctrine, rather carefully, and found it to be quite enriching.

What interested me about this following interview is that she mentions the argument that low prices at Wal Mart are beneficial to the common man. They are "progressive". My argument is (as you know) that supposedly "progressive" mechanics produce the opposite of the supposed intended effect (ie they hurt the most vulnerable class). I know this because I see it and live it every day as a small business owner. I feel like a dolphin in the nets. They wanted squeeze big business, but here I am...

But I digress.

When the only thing you've known is inflation it's hard to imagine a world where unfettered productive capacity produces ever-decreasing prices causing real wages to rise. Imagine for a moment that for the next year everything you bought was one-tenth the cost (eg a gallon of milk was $0.30 and a new car $2000, oh wait that maybe was the price forty years ago...). How would your life change? This is what it is like when the effects of increased efficiency and productive power are not interrupted in their flow.

This is easy to imagine if you scale it down to a village. At first the ground is hard and rocky, but after a few years of work there are rewards to go around as all classes of production become more efficient. More milk means lower prices of milk. An established lumber mill is now producing finished planks rather than expending resources on actually building the mill.

There are forces that are removing resources from the system, leaving less to go around. Invisible and inexorable mechanisms are used (taxation, inflation, manipulation and limitation of money type and supply) to create concentrations of wealth and power. My chief argument against Naomi Klein's conclusions (eg only huge centralized government can save the common man) is that the very institution that can work for this (supposed) good is the very one that can create the problem in the first place (Corporatism). Or to fall back on a tired analogy: no one can be trusted to wield the Ring of Power, it must be destroyed once and for all. Or put another way: the government that is powerful enough to give you everything you want is also powerful enough to take everything you have.

In my view, a world with very limited government and maximum personal freedom would empower tremendously the common man. Take my case for example. I've done quite well, and even made jobs for other people, from just a modest paint kit and a foldout table in my garage. The Federal Government has done nothing except harass and hinder me from the get-go.

Or would it look like Somalia? Not really, that's what zero government looks like. Even if we scaled back 80% it would still be up for the task of defending sufficiently the freedom and safety of its citizens.

I had better stop now.

On with the show.

Immortal Souls vs. Fear and Force

I emphatically do NOT advocate violence against the government or its agents.

Oceanic Eldar Plans

Yesterday I started a game of 40K with Josh. He's using 2500 pts of my Nids and I'm using the Oceanic Eldar. They barely came in at 2500 pts with the addition of five of Josh's Pathfinders. I didn't take the Scorpion, though, so the total points are probably more like 2850.

It became obvious that I'll need to do quite a bit to bring the Oceanic Eldar up to speed. First off, some of the magnetization has reverse polarity, just a few items, but that needs to be fixed. The Vypers need to have more magnetized options, so I plan on making everything uniform in that department.

I have sold (but not shipped) the four grav tanks for the army. The intent is to replace them with "quads" made from the new Fire Prism kit. A "quad" grav tank serves as any of the four main tanks: Fire Prism, Night Spinner, Falcon and Wave Serpent. These all have in common that they have two main weapon systems (well, a weapon and a generator in the case of the Prism) which will work quite well with the two-point design of the new kit.

Here's what I plan on adding:
+2 Vypers (for a total of six)
+6 Grav Tank quads (oh, yeah, this is happening)
+7 Pathfinders
+2 Wraithlords
+3 Support Weapons (the new kit is just too cool to leave out)

This should be happening in the next four weeks. Warhammer Fantasy 8th edition is on the horizon and there is some excited chatter about the studio for that one. Everyone wants to know who is going to play what army.
