Story of Rackham and Confrontation

Story of Rackham (company) and Confrontation (game). I found this on the net when I started digging for an answer. The question: what happened to all those gorgeous models? This was of intense interest to me. Apparently, you can't even reliably get the pre-paint plastics anymore. (This was not written by me). Enjoy.

There is a success formula in business: if you don’t have several million dollars to start with and make a pretty big company from the get-go, then you start small and do something you have a real interest in; you do it well, better than anyone else; better still – you do something no one has done yet. This in no way guarantees success. In fact, most businesses that start like this shut down after a couple of years of struggling. But, if there is a chance to become big, quickly and from nothing, this is it. That’s what Rackham attempted to do with Confrontation. Jean Bey, the founder of the company, is not a businessman. As some of his colleagues indicate, he is not even a gamer. But he is crazy about design. And he is damn good at designing beautiful, gorgeous things. So, it seems to me, the original idea behind Confrontation back in late 1990s was simple: create a top-quality miniature game with absolutely gorgeous miniatures. Make them so beautiful, that people will want to buy them even if they’re not sure about playing the game. Make them look like sculptures, not comic book characters. On top of that, create a ruleset that will be notably different and actually innovative – thus, differentiating the system from the land of stagnation that is GW. In terms of business, this means creating a premium product for a very small but potentially loyal market of visual perfectionists and painting junkies; this being the case, you create a product with a high value added, thus, hopefully, ensuring the viability of the business with small sales volumes.

This line of reasoning makes sense and, it seems, it was working out for a while; but Rackham was not really about business. It was about pretty, pretty things. Have you held a Cadwallon rulebook in your hands? If design means anything to you, this book makes you salivate just looking at it. You don’t even have to read it. It’s the design that makes you want to have it. Hold it. Smell it… And that’s a fifty euro book, by the way. Same thing with Cry Havoc. Ok, those weren’t just about design, but also the writing. But the two were closely intertwined: Cry Havoc was a magazine produced for those who wanted to savour their gaming universe. (And those, too, were twenty euro per issue; that’s no print-it-yourself PDF for you; but for the passionate audience, that was perfectly fine; furthermore, I really doubt, even with these prices, Rackham was making much, if any, profit, on publications – it was fan service more than anything else.) I’ll bet you anything that a large portion of the people who bought Confrontation, and Cry Havocs, and Hybrid, and Cadwallon with its supplements, and every other piece of anything visual produced by Rackham did not even play the game – much or at all. The universe was fascinating. And I’m not just talking about the universe of Aarklash. It was the universe of Rackham: the universe of beautiful fantasy design and captivating stories told through books, and magazines, and miniatures, and cards, and maps… It was loyal market built on passion, indeed. Apparently, it didn’t work out all that well financially in the long run. So, things started to change.

By mid-2000s Rackham was already under considerable financial pressure. Early in 2007 Rackham was under bankruptcy proceedings, and soon afterwards – became public. Looks like the latter was the direct implication of the former and was probably one of the things that was planned to get the company back on its feet. Another big move in 2007 relating to bankruptcy was scrapping Confrontation and launching Age o Ragnarok.

Rackham is a small company, so of course, even when public, it is not actually traded in the open market. Going public in such cases means finding an investor who is ready to give some money in exchange for a share in the company’s profits and, more importantly, a degree of control over the company’s business model. The launch of Age o Ragnarok was the result of the influence of the new management. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if the shareholder that decided to invest in Rackham in 2007 was the same company that later bought the whole studio in 2008 and now develops AoR. But, whoever it was, Jean Bey was demoted from CEO to Art Director, meaning that the new shareholder put someone they were more comfortable with in charge of Rackham. The launch of AoR, of course, had to be discussed well before the deal was closed: realizing that they can’t survive on their own, Rackham had to come up with a new business plan that the new investor would like. What this means is that, in terms of business and marketing philosophy, the 2007 Rackham was no longer the Rackham that Jean Bey had founded. It was no longer about making pretty miniatures. It was solely about money now. The immediate problem with that change was that pretty much all of the old Confrontation players renounced Rackham right then and there. It was more than just switching to plastic. It was the collapse of the universe that was Rackham (however small it was): no more mind-blowing design, no more books so pretty you want to cry, no more Cry Havoc, no more Legendary range, no more Hybrids, no more Cadwallons… (not all of these things happened right away, but the trend has been clear ever since 2007).

The next step was only reasonable and should have been expected: in 2008 Jean Bey sold the rest of his shares in Rackham to Entrepreneur Ventures, a French venture fund, which, it seems now, is Rackham’s sole owner. Jean Bey himself was fired soon afterwards, and has nothing to do with Rackham any longer. According to some employees of new Rackham Entertainment (renamed by the new owner; re-branding and repositioning is, of course, the name of the game now) who realized that making money is much better than making pretty miniatures, having Jean Bey leave was not such a bad thing: his vision had never been very good for business; the new owners, on the other hand, really “get it” and want to make Rackham profitable while leaving the staff enough creative freedom to make plastic armies and downloadable PDF books.

And now let us imagine for a second the world through the eyes of Entrepreneur Ventures. They acquire an asset, Rackham Entertainment, and they need it to be profitable. Not tomorrow, not next week, but soon. Being a venture fund, they realize, of course, that risky assets sometimes fail to become profitable – that’s why they are risky. In which case they are just liquidated. Nothing personal, just business. But it hasn’t come to that just yet. Yes, AT-43 seems to be selling worse than expected, AoR is somewhat struggling, but nothing is lost yet. Since the model catering to a premium small niche had failed, the attempt is now being made to make AoR more mass-market. In fact, some things indicate that they may now be thinking “Battlelore-mass-market” or even, god forbid, “Catan-mass-market”. Have you seen the new website? You know what AoR is, according to this just-launched website? It’s “a medieval fantasy strategy game with miniatures. It plays like chess, but involves some randomness and bluff as in poker. It is easy to learn and ready to play”. Now, that’s some powerful stuff right here. Apparently, the only table-top gaming references that the new Rackham can reasonably rely on its intended customer to know are chess and poker. That’s some truly awe-inspiring target audience. It’s hard to say how serious the new Rackham is about all this. But it’s definitely something to think about.

What else do we see through the eyes of the new investor? Miniature gaming business is based on intellectual properties. As far as each individual miniature is concerned, the bulk of your investment goes into designing it. So, to maximize your returns, you’ll obviously want to sell the same design as many times as possible. And that’s where the new approach to Confrontation comes in very handy. We gamers consider the lack of diversity in the now-in-PPP-form miniatures a temporary inconvenience. Not necessarily so for the publisher. AoR is not really marketed towards collectors. It is made for gamers who want somewhat pretty soldiers to go with their rulesets. As such, what matters is how your miniatures affect game mechanics. Sure, you’ll still want diversity for that, but in this case it can wait. What you do as a gamer is buy an army box, play it, get into it, decide that you like it. You go out and buy some more minis choosing from those that are available. There aren’t many, but, lucky you, the new rules force you to field swarms of regular infantry before you can deploy any non-standard units. And it’s not like the game became much cheaper having gone to plastic. Boxes, some of them containing as many as one miniature, are officially priced at thirty-odd euro. So, as a semi-casual gamer, you’ll run out of money set out for your next AoR purchase well before you’ve bought every mini available for your faction. And when you decide to buy more, there will be new ones available. And, from the business point of view, you’ve bought many, many copies of the same minis, helping the new Rackham to be profitable by maximizing their returns per mini.

If you are a not-so-casual gamer, then what will keep you coming back to the store is the rules themselves. One of Rackham’s employees confessed that the system is really designed for 5000-point armies. So, diversity or not, you kinda need to have lots of minis just to get everything out of your already made investment. You have 3000 points? Well, how much more is it really going to cost you to bump it up to 4000-5000 to get a really impressive army? Everyone wins. Sort of…

If this looks like your kind of approach, I don’t see any real red flags at this point on the technical side of things. Just some minor alarm bells. For example, have you ever wondered why the Griffin Army Book is called “Temple” and not “Griffin”? That’s because there will be three of them: Temple, Inquisition and The Lodge of Hod. In itself – not a crime, especially if they remain freely downloadable. But, if the three end up being different, even if allied, factions, which you can’t freely deploy in any combination, that would be a very different story. Another potentially worrying thing – overall marketing strategy. I mean, what if they’re really serious about selling the game to chess and poker lovers? Do you really want to be in that crowd? As it stands now, it shouldn’t influence your purchase decisions. But as things develop, the kind of support the game gets from the publisher will largely depend on who primarily buys it. Furthermore, it may be innovative and potentially groundbreaking to try to create a real mass-market miniature game, but if that strategy fails, the new Rackham will end up like the old Rackham. Only this time there won’t be anyone willing to buy it – it will be too screwed up a trademark.

Since making money is now the official motto, there’s a danger that we will get a new GW with a French twist. That’s bad enough on its own, but especially sad when you think what Rackham used to be. There may be a sad lesson taught by the old Rackham to industry newcomers – that you can’t create a really buyer-oriented miniature game, with no army books, no artificial deployment limitations, no miniatures going out of date with rule updates, with tons of diversity in terms of game experience for your investment (there were at least five games – five! – you could play with Confrontation metal miniatures). I hope that’s not really the case. I hope it’s a false lesson, and Rackham shut down because it made a few specific mistakes, not because the market doesn’t allow what it attempted to do at all. Whatever the case, the new Rackham is very different. A buyer is now just that – a buyer; not a fellow artist; not a fellow gamer; not a fellow enthusiast. You bring us money – we bring you entertainment. Then you bring us more money.

At the end of the day, it is, of course, a matter of taste. But there is some profoundly rotten feeling I get when looking at the new product line of AoR. It feels like the buyer is being taken advantage of. Look at the army books. You won’t find almost a single picture of the new plastic figures (in case of the factions I know well, I could count two or three pictures of plastic – out of sixty four goddamn pages!), it’s all metal on new round bases. Is Rackham ashamed to show what you’re actually buying? Or is it simply trying to take you for a ride by showing you pictures of what you could have been buying, but actually can’t because the new management insisted on shutting down the production of the last minis in the metal range? Rackham has never been good at communicating with the public and never really bothered to explain why it does what it does; but now, without such an explanation (and I’m not sure there can even be one that would be good enough), it looks like the new Rackham is downright exploiting what isn’t really theirs. This is where – for me – the “business point of view” goes out the window and “ethics” becomes an issue: Aarklash, the background, the designs, the aesthetics, the approach – were all developed by the old Rackham. They made some mistakes, screwed up and almost went out of business. Granted, being purchased by someone else is better than disappearing altogether. But what do the new owners do? They strip mine the franchise: instead of giving you something to be passionate about, they put you on the money conveyor belt, constrict you by rules, release schedules, packaging, army books and then try to present the few buying choices that you have as a perfectly natural and good thing. I mean, army boxes really seem like a good value. And, once you’ve invested in them, you don’t really want to stop there, right? So go out and buy some more. Sure, the miniature aren’t as pretty as they used to be, sure you can’t build and deploy any army you want, sure you don’t have a lot of units to choose from, but, hey, you’ve already jumped on the bandwagon – so just go with the flow. And, in the meantime, why don’t you appreciate the depth of the gaming universe and its background? Sure, all of it was created by the old Rackham and the new one doesn’t bother investing in it because books and magazines don’t bring any profit and are of little importance to chess lovers anyway, but since what is already there is already there – go ahead and enjoy it.

Then again, I guess if the game is fun, none of this matters anyway. Money for entertainment. That’s all there is to it. That’s all there should be. Right?

Disclaimer: Facts on which this article is based were all found in the public domain and primarily come from statements, official and private, made by Rackham employees on public internet forums and in interviews. The interpretation of these facts and the narrative arranging them are my own. The purpose of this article is to gather as many facts about Rackham that are scattered out there in one place as possible. My hope is that a good deal of these facts will come from contributions by those who are interested in Rackham as a company and are willing to discuss it. The practical purpose – to give those who are planning to invest into Rackham’s products a sense of where the company is coming from and where it is going. I bet, many people who bought GW products back in the day would have had real second thoughts about it if they had known more about GW’s marketing philosophy. But some wouldn’t. Forewarned is forearmed.

Digging

Regarding political posts: I invite anyone with a measured response to email me with it. I'm just a man who is digging around. I'm asking questions. Do I have my facts wrong? Are my conclusions wrong? Are there holes in my reasoning? Am I missing something?

I would be happy to hear the other side. I'd love to hear a case for the banks and for deficit spending. My main focus as you may have noticed is monetary policy. I still shy away from social issues. It's because I believe that the de-centralization of power (I'm for it) and economic freedom (I'm for it) will mostly take care of those issues.

One size does not fit all. I don't care if you're a purple-haired freak, if a Federal tank is about to run you over you could expect me to run into the street to stand by you. I don't like to see the little guy get smashed in the head.

I don't have comments enabled on my blog because strange people were using it to threaten me anonymously.

Eldar v Blood Angels

Today we're doing a batrep: Eldar vs Blood Angels. The latter will be the Death from Above all jump pack list (I've still got a few slots open for that special). Might take me a few days to process, but I'll see if I can't get a sneak peek up.

Desperation Thursday

Welcome to Desperation Thursday.

If you can Paypal me money today or tomorrow, make me an offer on something you've been wanting. This can be an army or anything you've seen in various vids, or that you know I have. Or even a special project you've been thinking about.

Don't worry about insulting me. That won't happen. I will take you up on your offer OR you won't hear back (no hard feelings). Send email to bluetablepainting@gmail.com

Best to hit me with your best offer-- someone might give me a better one. I might not get back to you until Friday.

Every time I have a sale, or "liquidate assets", I get some emails asking if I'm going out of business or if everything is all right. I really appreciate the concern. Just for the record BTP is doing quite well. We are solvent and able to handily pay the bills. However, like every business I do get an occasional cash flow pinch. And for these occasions I have a stock of painted figures to liquidate. It's kind of like our savings.

Whatever you do, watch this vid

If you don't care about this, you had better start caring. The US* has a giant hypodermic of new money, imagine a hypo with ten gallons in it, already inserted into its neck. It's full of inflation, debt, and misery.

Read details here.

As usual, down the road when the crap hits the fan, the central government will pretend to ride to the rescue which will really be just an excuse to strip the population of their property and their rights. It will be done invisibly as possible and in a way the common man won't understand. Minority/fringe groups and/or foreigners will be blamed. Well, you'd better start looking into it!

This isn't conspiracy theory. This is "the basic things that a bank does". Our monetary system guarantees that a certain percentage of the people will completely stripped of their lives. The math is simple: banks take more than they give. In fact they give almost nothing and take almost everything through interest (which most understand) and fractional reserve banking.

I dream of a world where the ten giant banks on the main street of my town are all shut down (their charters removed when the Federal Reserve is abolished). That will stop the horrific bleedout of Spanish Fork's resources to distant corporations. And then that banks are re-assigned to their proper role (storage and transfer of commodity-backed money as well as full-reserve loans/investment).

If each dollar were backed by ten pounds of bricks it would be worth more than it is now. Even a single brick. If it were backed by air it would be at least backed by something. Now it's backed by trust in the Federal Government. That's worth zero in my book.

A time of hyperinflation is terrible particularly for low-income people and small savers because in a few hours or in a few days they see their salaries and savings got destroyed by price increases which take place at a rapid pace. Then, a cry goes up to the government to "do something!" And if the government comes with a good stabilization plan, that is the chance to accompany it with other reforms. The vultures swoop in to peck the poor dying victim to death.

If you're amazed that our "leaders" (so called) seem unconcerned as they plunge the country into the dark pit of debt don't be. This is the precursor the desperation that will cause the population to accept drastic changes in order to eliminate the hyperinflation (usually wage and price controls-- there goes the free market).

Hyperinflation creates the context for emergency measures in which democracy can be suspended and controls handed over to an elite few.

What can you do? Get shock resistant. Pay off your debts. Get into fixed rate loans. Have a backup plan for housing (mom, if things go south, can I stay in my old room for a while). And most importantly, stock up on the poor man's gold: canned goods. Just a month's supply can keep you out of trouble. And most of all, get mentally prepared. Know your stuff so you won't be duped.

We won't be the first country this has happened to. Nearly every country in Latin America has been bombed into oblivion by the off-shore batteries of the IMF. As former IMF Managing Director Davison Budhoo wrote:

"To me resignation is a priceless liberation... I have taken the first big step to that place where I ... hope to washy my hands of what in my mind's eye is the blood of millions of poor and starving peoples... The blood is so much, you know, it runs in rivers. It dries up, too; it cakes all over me; sometimes I feel that there is not enough soap in the whole world to cleanse me from the things that I did do in your name."

To all people who work in the banking industry I say, "Get out brother (or sister)! Get out as quick as you can!" As the truth comes out the black shame of fraud will seep down, darkest and thickest at the top, but it will ooze all the way to the bottom. It will make me sad. I don't want anyone to feel that way.

*and most other countries, so don't think it can't happen to you.

Testimonial: BTP Effect

Good Afternoon Mr. Shawn,

I have just opened the Grey Knights, and I have to say that they look better in person than the photographs would indicate. It seems to be a common occurrence regarding the difference between photo and actual appearance. We have dubbed this disparity the “BTP Effect”. :D

HR 1207 Federal Reserve Transparency Act

The American public should be following HR 1207 very closely. This is talk about the credit card held by the government. The credit card that has fourteen trillion dollars racked up on it.

Abolishing the Federal Reserve would be like cutting up the credit card. Ending the Fed is a monumental move. It's a societal change along the lines of the emancipation proclamation. It's like throwing the one ring into the fiery pit. That's not what this bill does, of course, but it's a step in the right direction. It's like a couple that has overspent on ten credit cards sitting down and looking it in the face: how did we end up in this much debt? Where did the money go?

At this time, I believe the banking system is the source of most of the world's problems. Yes, I just said that. War and Poverty can be mostly traced to banking and manipulation of the money. It is the Root.

I'm not the only one that is thinking this turns out.
I came to my conclusion, or at least a critical question, just walking down the main street of my small town: there are ten huge, well-landscaped bank buildings squatting on prime real estate. What are they doing there? What are they contributing that is so important?

I am currently wracking my brain trying to figure out a way to cut the banks out of the loop of my life. It's going to take a while to pull the cables out of my spine.

Here is an interesting blog post that echoes (to some degree, especially the part about feeling like a neophyte) my own sentiment:

Too complicated to go over in a blog. You need to go to mises.org and start buying books. Or get a paid subscription to garynorth.com and start learning. It's been a 10 year road for me and I'm still a neophyte. Fractional reserve banking is fraud pure and simple. If you loan money that you do not have, and earn interest on it, it's fraud. It's no different than selling products that you don't actually own.

What you must understand is that whomever creates the money will get full value out of it. As it filters through the economy it will lose value through inflation and thus the users of that same money later in the process are being robbed.

Ex. I print $100. There is only $1000 in circulation at the time I print it. I use it to buy things at the current price. As more money is available to more people, they start buying things and prices go up. I got full value from the money-- the last people to use it will get 10% less for the same $100 because now there's $1100 to go around for the same goods. Of course this is very simple, but if the money supply increases faster than goods and services expand, we get higher prices.

So, i am evil in this scenario. I received the fruit of others labor without toiling for it myself. I just printed it. It's even worse if I were a bank and loaned it out at interest. It's money that I didn't earn, and I make more money on it through interest and I do it on someone else's back. I make money from "fiat money" that I spent almost no effort or expense to create. Simple fraud. Just ask Andrew Jackson.

Day of Rest

At this moment it's 3:30am. After getting home from the convention I was really quite short-circuited with stimulation. The kids all then wanted attention from Dad, which I am happy to give because of how much I love them, like them, and adore them, but that was yet more stimulation. I just really needed to get to sleep, so I completely conked out about the same time as the baby.

I certainly scratched my political itch. Not only that but at this moment I'd really just like to not talk about it for about two months.

So let's talk about something else! Let's talk about the future.

Those that have been following the Saga of Gately know the I underwent a transformation of sorts a few years ago. I had big ambitions to be the "Fedex of miniatures painting". But then I realized that what I really wanted was to live my life humbly and quietly. It was liberating. That's when I started putting up the Youtube videos about anything I pleased, blogging about anything I pleased. I call it "limited voraciousness".

That's not to say I don't have some goals. Getting out of debt is a big one. The business has a moderate amount that has been steadily declining. Remember the Clean Slate sale? That helped, but in the end my charge up the hill petered out about halfway. And personally we just have the student loans (ugh) to get rid of. Beyond that, my vision really focuses in on making my wife happy. She loves her some security. She really likes to cook, so a remodel of the kitchen would be keen. A while back we made a list of home remodel projects we'd like to do.

Our front yard is a travesty. It's overgrown like a prairie, with about as much biodiversity as the Amazon Basin. The dandelions are back with a vengeance. I hate those things, they kill the grass around them and only constant vigilance can keep them at bay. We have two broken down old tanks for lawn mowers that both need a visit to the scrap heap. So, there's another goal; get a good lawnmower and re-do the front yard. I think I'll putter around out there tomorrow morning.

I also have a dirty little fantasy about a metallic orange hatchback. Not likely to happen given my penchant for buying cars with cash only (ie $900 hunks of junk like I've driven for seven years). No complaints mind you. For the first couple of years that I had the business I didn't even have a car. Then I drove a tin can with no heater for two years and liked it (at least it was something at all) and now I feel pretty deluxe with heat, A/C AND a radio. Once the bills are paid up I'm going to save up for a few/six months and upgrade to something nicer.

Willow's hair is getting long. It's blond and curly in the back and her bangs are getting in her eyes. She's getting some good pre-speech going; "Dah!" for "Dog". She doesn't really need to talk all that much since she's surrounded by humans that take care of her without needing to fuss to much. She loves to sit with me by the computer and watch Youtube vids of cats and dogs. Her favorite one is "sleepy puppies". When I say that she will grab her bottle, a stuffed animal and head to out bedroom to sit on the bed by my laptop, snuggling in for the show. That girl sure loves her Dad. I even win out over Mom when I get home from work.

While I was at the convention yesterday, my wife went to a charity run for Breast Cancer. She came back from that energized and happy. Even happier than usual, and that's pretty happy. She is an angel walking this earth; a creature without guile, jealousy, or pettiness. She is full of forgiveness and understanding to her fellowman. She serves without hesitation and without counting the cost. The best thing that ever happened to me was meeting her.

Back to goals. Short term I really would like to take a week solo trip out to Oregon. Just me. Get some writing done.

Long term, like in ten years I see consolidation. I want to live humbly, securely and well. I'd like to see the house paid off. I want to tend to the security and strengthening of the business and an even better situation for the people I work with. K will be graduating in eight years, so about that time, those other expenses are coming due.

I'd like to see the boys serve missions.

I have no ambition to send my kids to college. I think it's a waste of time. That puts me at loggerheads with their mom quite often. I'd be glad to pay for trade school. You know, something useful. I think the days of the traditional four-year are numbered. I'd rather go door-to-door with a toilet brush than go to college again. But that's just me. If it weren't for the cost, though, I would definitely go back to college. I really was indeed enriched by the experience. I just wish I weren't paying off student loans for twenty years. Not a good ROI.

As for the business, I want to grow it up and not out, as I'm nagging almost constantly. By that I mean really laser focus on giving stellar service rather than trying to make more and more sales. Quality not quantity. I think it's high time for us to get into subsidiary areas like sculpting and casting and gaming aids. I'd like to get a C&C machine and start making stuff like Galeforce 9. And get a casting room set up; make a line of resin bases.

When hiring this last round I was amazed at the number of people out of work. It saddens me. I view the business as a way to benefit my fellowman. A job is one of the great things in this life; a profession, a career, a passion. I want to bring that to the people that work at BTP. I get more joy from giving away resources than obtaining them. And that's saying something, because I really like making money. When I provide a job for someone, it's like saving them from unemployment. I wish that the employment were better, that I were paying more.

I'm also worried about inflation. When a tidal wave comes the beach-goers are mystified when the water recedes way out. Right now we are in that silent rush economically. The tidal wave is still off shore. All that printing and borrowing has yet to work its way through the (fraudulent) fractional reserve banking system. I am trying to get my crew and my operation to higher ground.

All of this paid for with cash up front, of course. No loans.

I also really need to tighten up my game when it comes to media. I should be getting out a battle report every week without fail. And editing them better.

Thank you all for tuning in. The fans for the Youtube channel and also for the blog are a constant source of happiness and renewal for me. I have been pleasantly surprised over the years with the overwhelmingly positive response.

Yup, that's about it. See you all Monday.

Wiped Out

Saturday. Today. I had one of the most eventful days of my life. I went to State Convention. I shot a lot of great vids which I hope to edit tomorrow. I wish I had more to give right now, but the kids need to get to bed and that's going to take my absolute last drop of energy.

Monopoly on Money

The Haircut

One day a florist went to a barber for a haircut.
After the cut, he asked about his bill, and the barber replied, 'I
cannot accept money from you , I'm doing community service this week.'
The florist was pleased and left the shop.
When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a
'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.

Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill,
the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from you , I'm doing
community service this week.' The cop was happy and left the shop.

The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a 'thank
you' card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.

Then a Congressman came in for a haircut, and when he went to pay his bill, the barber again replied, 'I can not accept money from you. I'm
doing community service this week.' The Congressman was very happy and
left the shop.

The next morning, when the barber went to open up, there were a dozen
Congressmen lined up waiting for a free haircut.

Trip to CA

I had a dream last night that I saw California in her primordial glory. And I was happy for that moment to have lived there once as a child and once as a man.

The dream seemed so real that I was fully expecting to wake up and have to buy a plane ticket back to Utah.

So, I won't be calling California a "hole" anymore.

What God hath called clean, call thou not unclean... and all that.

In other news:
Pennsylvania knows where you live.

Jealous of CT

If you live in Connecticut I'm so jealous of you. You get the chance to vote for this guy:

Plastic Creatures

Willow loves pizza. She eats it by picking all the toppings off with her hands. She does pretty good with her six little chompers.

Friday evening I held a "compare notes" meeting for state delegates at the studio. I was expecting only like three or four people to show up, but ended up with about fifteen. We discussed the merits of various candidates for US Senate. I wish I could have recorded it. For those that may be interested I'll have vids up about my adventures as a delegate at www.youtube.com/gatelymusings

I hung out with the family this morning (Saturday). A fan sent in many hundreds of D&D minis and I sorted through those while sitting on the living room floor. I classed them into three bins: PCs, cool monsters and other monsters. Willow kept getting in the bins. The boys lined up the monsters and had mock fights with them. Afterward, I took them back to the studio where I ran a quick D&D session with just Brigh.

My car was having electrical/alternator problems a few weeks back, but apparently my wife's brother fiddling around in there has solved those. Still, I'm staying in town. I don't want to go very far in that unreliable hunkajunk.

I am getting an almighty hankering to play a game of 40K. I'd like to take some of my new Tyranid creatures for a spin (3x Pyrovores, 10x Gargoyles). However, I think it's high time to dust off the ole Eldar and give Josephus a run for his money.

I'm taking orders for May now. Always taking orders technically.

The predominant thought on my mind is the goodness and grace of God. I used to start my prayers with "I'm sorry" but now I've dropped that and start them with "I praise thee for thy goodness and grace and mercy upon me." If I get so much as one single blessing from God or if even one good thing happens to me in life I ascribe this to Providence. I believe that He wants to bless all his creations as much as they will bear. Even the bad things are a blessing.

I got home at 6pm or so to relieve my lovely wife. She took the older kids to a school play (Through the Woods) and I stayed home with the little ones. While working at my home office (a white resin table next to the bed) Willow was cavorting around in the blankets with a white stuffed dog and my cell phone.

Remember, I've got a new Youtube channel devoted to politics. So far it's pretty boring with just recordings of the various town halls I've gone to.
