Seven Down
All seven of the initial run of Pandora's armies are done. Final count is: two each of Deathguard, Wood Elves, and Tau; then one Imperial Guard. Pics are up on the website. I couldn't make vids of all of them. I am especially pleased with the Wood Elves; one of my favorite armies and the color scheme came out cohesive and vibrant. Often, they are done in a theme according to a season; Autumn, Summer, and Winter are common, but I've not seen a Spring yet until now.
I am in the middle of acquiring models for the next run. There is one open spot, but you'd need to move fast to claim it. Then I will start the preparations for the September run.
Of course, you can still commission any project you like. Anything, anytime. We're ready whenever you are. If you see any of the Pandora-type armies that you like, you can just ask us to replicate it, even with some modifications. They usually weigh in at $1100 to $1350, everything included.
We are also painting up some models for BOLScon in late August. I have about five Forge World figures and three other projects going for that. We are not physically going to BOLScon this time.
I also got in a few specialty pieces for the studio Lizardmen army: an Oldblood on Carnosaur, which is a fabulous alternative to the Slann Mage Priest. He's hell on wheels, starting with five S5 attacks. A skink shaman with feathered cloak, and a new Scar Veteran Battle Standard. That's it for that army. It'll be 3000 points without any magic items (and about 500 points worth of open space for that, including magic banners).
I'm picking away on the side at a Wood Elves force. Not sure where that is going. There's a lot still to be done. I just have some of the specialty pieces. So many games, so little time. I'm hoping to get a game in this weekend. And maybe a game of Hordes. No, I have not forgotten about that-- the other players in my little group have been swamped.
I got in my book "Myth of the Rational Market". I'm a few chapters in. I thought it would be the opposite of the other two books I've read (both from Ron Paul's reading list) but it isn't. It's just in another area. It seems to me that all of them miss the obvious. Banks and their ilk should be done away with entirely. Their fundamental truth is that they take away more than they give; produce nothing, provide no useful service, and indeed leave every region they touch poorer than before. Each bank is a vortex that sucks away the life essence of the community like the Skeksis life-draining machine.
Just to be clear on that last point. When I say "do away with banks" I mean, "do away with the defining characteristic of banks which I think is the source of the problem" which is Fractional Reserve Banking and it's degenerate cousin, Usury. It creates a fundamental distortion which is unfair; like giving certain connected citizens counterfeiting machines and immunity from prosecution on charges of counterfeiting.

Today, 4200 points of Deathguard were unveiled for the Pandora's army special. This is the type of thing we are making for this. Vid is forthcoming.
For each army I do something special: a conversion, an unusual unit, something eye-catching or clever or just a few extra pieces.

Wading Pool
I was supposed to go into work today, a Friday.

Starting bright and early in the morning, I practically cleared my inbox. All artists are on track and verified. I kept pushing back my time of departure until finally I decided to just hang out at home with the family. A slow and lazy day.
.
I am over half-way through Star Trek TNG season 7.
.
In the afternoon I headed to the pool with the three older kids to give my wife a much-needed break (sure, I left her with the baby, but the baby is very mild, more on that later). That was an adventure. We had pink-frosted sugar cookies for a snack. I followed the youngest around to be sure he didn't get into more trouble than he could handle. It was extremely crowded, probably from being a Utah holiday. G and I waited for a long time to go down the water slide, but once it was our turn they turned him away for having life-jacket inserts in his suit. He took it very well. We were there for a few hours, measured in layers of sunscreen, before a distant sighting of lightning scared up a chorus of life-guard whistles and we had to evacuate. I convinced the kids of the wisdom of heading to a local burger joint to eat and play on the playground.

My wife needed the time to cook dinner for a family where the mother has recently died of pneumonia. So, I kept the kids out of her hair for a few more hours. It was a young mother, younger than I by a few years, and a neighbor just down the block. My wife knew her, and was her friend and visiting teaching companion. She's pretty shaken up. This morning (now Saturday) she headed off to the mortuary to do the make-up. After saying a short heartfelt prayer with her and another neighbor-lady I looked up to see both of them already broken up. As usual, my response will be delayed-- stone-faced until everyone else is done. I think it took almost eight months when my own father died.
.
My daughter, now ten years, had some straightforward questions: What happens when one parent dies? Does the other one get remarried? I gave her straight and short answers until she seemed satisfied and went off to play. These last few weeks she will sleep in whatever room I am in, curling up on floor, chair, couch or whatever like a faithful pup.
.
On the way home from the pool, in the final leg of the journey as we made our way up a gently curving road to our home, I had a moment of bliss. Where the joy seems almost too much for the mortal frame. In front of me, the mountains loomed over a green cloud of trees. They looked to me like a Titan with long pale sandy fingers holding a moss-covered rock. To the right the storm front was moving in, making the entire mountain range disappear into pale greys and white, as if an artist had not finished the painting. In the rear-view I could see my sons, the youngest with sun-bleached hair, touseled and smiling, eyes sparkling with summery bliss as the shadows of the trees marched over him.

A moment when the longing for heaven is overtaken by a realization that I am already in heaven. There is a shard of it inside of me. I feel it like a cell-phone feels the cell-phone-tower. I feel the Heavens yearning for me, opening my heart's eye skyward.

Elephant in the Room

Being a teacher with summer vacation gives me time to read blogs! I was triggered by seeing your sensible post about the F-22, but not seeing anything about why the government would have started something so foolish in the first place. You noted that the government may or may not be acting in the interest of citizens. But then ask whose interest it is acting in.

I almost mentioned this a while ago when you made the Oligarchy post and talked about the elephant in the room and that you've studied some Latin American history. I don't think those businesses approach US citizens with any more morality than they approach the people of Latin America. The elephant in the room to me seems to be corporations.

Health insurance, banks, oil producers and refiners--these are not run by the government. Private corporations are in charge of all of those industries and have far more responsibility than the US government for crises within them (50 million people unable to see a doctor, the economic meltdown, an oil market divorced from supply and demand). I am not omitting the government, but I think the logic needs to go one step further. The failings within the government are that it serves those corporations more readily than it serves the interests of almost everyone else.

Look at how much the first two categories account for. Nearly 5 billion dollars. Have you heard about any problems in those industries lately?

I see massive problems with our government. However, I think it is wise to ask why it operates as it does. How are decisions made? I think the above list gives a answer to that question ... the people in the government have billions of dollars telling them to do what corporations want. What do corporations want? To make money--that is their legally-bound obligation. Spending billions of dollars must come with a payoff for them. If it didn't, they would be breaking the law for wasting shareholder money. Unfortunately that influence makes a problem for everyone else. Corporations have no morals because they aren't people--at least not at the level of large international companies. Corporations are legally bound to act in the interest of profit. There is no such binding to morality. Massively rich and powerful actors with no morals seem like an obvious source of problems.

Although government is part of the problem because of this influence, I still see it as the only viable solution. The government should serve as the agent of the people to force moral sense and bigger goals than making money onto corporations. I am not saying get rid of business. I am not saying get rid of government. I am saying that the two of them in a back scratching-fest (I'm tempted to put it more obscenely) is what does us in. I think the solution is in severing that relationship.

1. I believe what was actually cut was funding for additional f22s, not the entire program. That was the quote from cnn and Robert Gates a few days ago anyway.

2. If I may be so bold as to offer a dissenting opinion (said with a smile.)Defense projects like the f22 employ hundreds, often thousands of Americans in the private sector. Sure, there are government workers who contribute, no question. But the materials for the project and the construction of the craft are most often done by private companies. You should check out how most military contracts are gained, often competing private companies produce prototype products, and then are contracted for that item based on availability, performance, and political concerns.

This obviously only deals with procurement, but the military is one of the few branches of government that draws heavily from private industry to fill its needs.The cost to the taxpayer and the relative need for new military inovation aside (a discussion that is worth a few hundred thousand words at least) the U.S. military structure funds lots of inovation and start up companies.

P.S.I, personally have been converted to the cause of the conservative independent since this last election. Get the facts, ask questions, question statements involving dollars and numbers, what I've found is that nearly every number quoted today in politics to justify this program or that is an intentional distortion of reality, twisted to serve the speaker's personal opinion. Now having done some research, I truly feel the 2 party system has failed the American people by condencing our political options down to a few limited moderates who only differ from one another on a few token issues used to distinguish themselves from the other party.

Quantum Flux
At this moment I'm creating posts etc. and watching season 7 of Star Trek TNG.
Today, four thousand points of Tau came into existence. This represents the first two results from the Pandora's army special, first booked up approximately four weeks ago. See pics here and here.
There are four thousand points of Deathguard and four thousand points of Wood Elves being painted up right now. Amazing. I worked with Sarah2 on the wood elf prototypes until we were happy with the result.
What else? We will be doing a Luna Wolves warhound titan in the coming month. Complete with all weapon options magnetized. I'm excited about that.
As usual, I'm working on all sorts of army lists. Orcs and Goblins with two huge blocks of Black Orcs (including Grimgor Ironhide as army general). I've got eighty goblins already painted up. I did them for my D&D game. Those are the onerous part of an Orc army. For 40K I've got no current inspiration.
June 2009 Empire Releases
First things first. After seeing all this sweet kit, I want to see an Empire army come through the studio. At the end of this article I've got a a deal cooking...

Empire Greatsword Plastics $41.25 USD
This box set contains 10 multi-part plastic Empire Greatswords. This 132-piece kit includes: 13 different heads, 12 different arms wielding two-handed swords, six variant bodies, and five different sets of legs. Also included are all the pieces needed to assemble a champion, a musician and a standard bearer, and a host of additional components for customising the unit. Models supplied with 20mm square bases.
Shawn's Comments: I haven't seen this kit, but it seems to have quite a number of parts. This is the most expensive kit I've seen, at a hefty $4.15 per model. This is what is normally charged for metal figures. I don't understand it.

This 107-piece set includes: 10 different archer bodies, 20 different heads, and all of the components needed to assemble one archer as a marksman. Empire Steam Tank $57.75
Steam Tanks are monstrous, smoke-belching creations that rumble towards the enemy, firing deadly cannon balls from their steam-powered guns. The advance of these iron behemoths is terrifying to behold, as arrows ricochet from armoured hulls and enemy warriors are crushed beneath their immense bulk.
This box set contains one multi-part plastic Steam Tank. This 72-piece kit includes: two variations of cannon, an Engineer with choice of three heads, a host of Empire icons, and full interior detailing. Model supplied with a 50mm x 100m base.
Shawn's Comments: A steam tank is one of those units that is such a huge problem that it causes a panic check... in real life. It's a Rare choice for 300 points, so it takes up a good deal of pointage. It helps anchor the Empire line-- it causes Terror, is Unbreakable, and with Toughness 6, Armour Save of 1+ and TEN (yes TEN) Wounds it's not going anywhere anytime soon.
Take one if you want to be mean. Take two if you want to be cruel.
Marius Leitdorf $29.75
Marius Leitdorf is known as the Mad Lord of Averland. He is sullen and morose, and given to bouts of screaming and rage. A skilled swordsman, Marius fights with two blades; a Runefang in one hand and a long-bladed dagger in the other - a style of combat he has mastered better than anyone.
This blister contains one finely-detailed, metal Marius Leitdorf. Model supplied with a 25mm x 50mm base
Shawn's Comments: Like many models in this range, this would make a great generic Captain.

Equilibrium
Out past the city limits in Eagle Point, Oregon is a dirt road leading around a bend in the river, and out of sight past a hay field on the left and copses of tall whispering trees on the right. My wife and I lived on her Grandmother's seventy acre ranch for the summer. It was the summer after I graduated from college and Tamie was heavy with our first child. Her grandfather had died earlier that year and I was tending to the hay farm; fixing the tractor and moving pipe.
Grandma Ernie had a soft spot for cats. We counted fifty-six at one time, most of them feral types keeping to themselves under the porch or out in the woods. She would buy fifty pound bags of cat food and split them open with box knife on the back porch. Raccoons and other local animals would join in the nocturnal feast.
When Grandma Ernie passed on I imagine most of those cats died of starvation. Whole litters of kittens reduced to bones.

I read this morning that the F-22 program was cut. Here's an excerpt:
F-22 supporters complained the action would be a blow to long-term national defense — and cost thousands of jobs in the middle of the recession.
My humble insight: The F-22 program already costs jobs. It sucks them out of small businesses like mine. For everything that the government does visibly, it evaporates something in greater proportion invisibly. This is effected forcibly through a trio of evils: taxation, inflation, or public debt.
The difference is that in the private sector the job is created by actual demand of someone like you who chooses to buy a product or service, whilst in the government sector the job is created through other forces that may or may not be in your interest. It is done by force. How much government is good for the general welfare of the people? In my opinion it's about one quarter what we have now*.
Blue Table Painting exists because you want painted miniatures. You are best suited to decide what your money is good for. The more local the decision, the more efficiently and wisely it will be done as a general rule.

*if the income tax were eliminated and replaced with nothing it would reduce the federal budget by approximately 40%. It is my opinion that the government could do everything it needs to do with that amount of revenue. Imagine for one glorious moment what that would mean: no tax returns, no revealing your money matters to a stranger every year. For my miniscule business it would mean one more person could be hired.

Higher Enzymatic Content
My electric shaver broke today. Well, more like "died of natural causes". I bought it the week we arrived in Utah. How little at the time I knew the distress and joy I would experience here.
Anyway, the shaver had a cleaning station thing, that required the purchase of special solution in pairs, $25 a pop. That's how they get you. But I just cleaned it by hand this last year. Suckers. No more solution-gouging for me!

I am in the process of refurbishing a Tyranid army. I am adding some things to it. Those should arrive later this week.
Pandora's Permanency
I plan on running the Pandora special until further notice. So, hop on board when you are ready. I'm still going to do them in "runs", like trains that depart with a small group of passengers about once a month. But you can get on whenever you like.

Low on the Hog
I'm becoming some kind of suburban mormon hippie. Sulking against the machine.
Dane lent me some Regina Spektor. She's sort of a slightly happier, less abstract version of Tori Amos. Who I adore.
I picked up a desk for my home office off of freecycle. My wife found it online. So cheap and juicy! One morning, unshowered, I hopped in the car and headed down there to pick it up, my four-year old son coming along for the adventure.
I am convinced now that you can live well off the leavings of the wealthy. Of course, wealthy is a relative term. I've heard that by having a car, a fridge, and a toilet you're in the top five percent. Anyone want to back that up?
Once, when my wife and I were childless and broke and working for poverty wages, we dreamed of how much money we'd like to make every month. A number that seemed at the time so high (when we were bringing home like $850 a month), more than we could possibly spend, like who could possibly even blow that amount of dough every thirty days, now doesn't seem like that much. Of course, we were clueless as to how much it would cost to maintain four kids.
She also found three really nice dress shirts, pressed and dry cleaned, for $1.00 each at a garage sale. They are high-thread-count-tastic. I sprayed them with some of my cologne to make them my own. The human version of pissing out my territory.
Say that reminds me of a story. While tracting (door to door) on my mission in Chile (possibly the most onerous task known to man-- a labor of love, be nice to them, I believe it's good karma) we ran into this guy, who in a thick accent called his dog to introduce them to the Mormons. This pony-sized black creature trotted out and sniffed us. Then it lifted a monstrous left leg and gushed out a torrent of musky urine on our dress shoes. Dream of the Tickets
I had a dream last night. I was standing in front of the stage in the church (which in the dream was also my home and my studio) and a government worker came up to me. He told me that he had money to give me, but instead he handed me a roll of tickets, about the size of a hockey puck. He said they were valuable and that the following day I could go to the bank and find out how much they were worth.
He then proceeded to hand me three more rolls, each larger than the last which was the size of a movie reel.
Then he handed me a giant mass of disorganized tickets. I was thinking how I could keep them safe overnight. I opened the cupboards and they were packed full of food.
Here is my take on the meaning of the dream. There will be four years of significant inflation, then in the fifth year there will be an unraveling. It is wise to keep real commodities stocked.
Not saying anything prophetic here. Just a dream I had. Even an idiot can see the writing on the wall. Now, I'm not a doomsayer. I have great faith that even through trials the good men and women of this great country will hold together. They will do it in spite of the crooked policies of the degenerate elite. I believe the key is in the education of the masses. We should be asking questions, getting involved, communicating, reading, and calling our leaders to account. We must be like wolves; brazen, organized, independent-minded.
If I can take it a step further. I have been thinking a lot recently about how to apply all this in a practical and useful way. I read a conspiracy theory book last year. It didn't help much. Even if it were true, I couldn't do anything about it. Where is my power? I cast my vote and I feel like it's like throwing a pea at a tank. In Utah the vote goes like 70% republican no matter what.
But I have this blog. Pretty sure readership is over 2000. It's my dream that ten people will vote Independent (or Real Republican or even fiscally conservative Democrat! Good grief, anyone who will stay in budget looks good now) in 2010 on account of my influence. That will make my day. Let me know if you're one of them. I want people to feel sassy about their constitutional rights. Even if you go in for the exact opposite; great, at least you jumped in the ring.
Anyway, my short term goal (for 2009-2010) is to disconnect from the banks. I don't want anything to do with their dirty business. Whatever I can do to assert my independence. More to come on that.

Game Wise
Firstly, early next week you're going to see 4000 points of Tau coming off the line. We went for a true red and white color scheme. Armor plates are red, and white is a solid accent. They look quite striking, and patches of green static grass make them pop.
Likewise for Deathguard, two armies, each 2000 points for the Pandora's army special (still booking for that) are going under the brush this coming week. Same for Wood Elves. Same for Imperial Guard (but only 2000 points).

Oligarchy
As I'm thinking all this stuff over there is an elephant that keeps sneaking into the room.
What prevents the accumulation of wealth and power into the hands of a few? I imagine some Libertarian paradise if only the government would leave us alone, but more likely an oligarchy-type thing would just raise up in its place.
A progressive tax code (ie more taxes the more you make) is one way to accomplish this. If only the government could be trusted to administer it equitably. The worst situation is when government is in bed with the business, becoming, effectively a tool to force the will of the oligarchs on the people.
This is apparent in the book Open Veins of Latin America. Long story short: capitalism didn't work out so well for the central american indians.
The consolidation of power and resources is the root of Tyranny. The dispersal of those things is Liberty.
As a side note this ties into Mormon cosmology: Heavenly Father disperses unlimited resources to the individual and gives freedom of choice. His Adversary vows to take the treasures of the earth and consolidate military, economic and religious power to oppress mankind.

Health Care
Someone suggested that I post my comments on the Health Care "debate" going on.
I haven't really been following it. I am absorbing other material right now (economics).
I can say this though: the Federal Government does not have a great track record with getting rid of something once they are started. You are still paying income tax because of the sixteenth amendment from 1913 (right around the time that the Federal Reserve came into being).
So whatever happens, plan on it starting small (social security started out a 1% and is now a hefty 6-7%-- double this to include the indirect tax on the employer) and then turning into an iron band around your neck. Of course, this will need to be raised in order to "save" the program after the money has been blown on other stuff. What we need saving from is the incompetence and voraciousness of the federal government.
The thing I keep wondering is if there is a shortage of doctors? Or of medical equipment? This problem should be attacked by increasing the supply of thing people want. Isn't that so obvious? If a doctor's appointment, say to get a checkup, were only $15, then there would be no problem just paying for it out of pocket.
Part of the reason healthcare is so expensive is becuase of the stratospheric rise in malpractice insurance costs.
There's no talk of how to increase the availability of health care. It needs to be less expensive. Talk of making everyone get insurance somehow so they can afford something just boggles the mind. And if the insurance is too expensive, then how can that be cheaper.
It can't help the cost of healthcare when giant, black tick-like beings (called trial lawyers) are sucking the life out of the system either.
The story of my ingrown toenail is illustrative.
When I returned from South America in 1992 I had a mother of an ingrown toenail. It was red, pustulent, painful and infected.
I went to the major hospital in my town; a monolithic building squatting in a pool of asphalt. They wanted over a thousand dollars just to book the surgical room. It was a major deal. It's my opinion that these prices are a distortion of the system caused by government involvement.
Then I went to a family practice. It was insanely busy, the doctor scarcely had time to look me over. He wanted to get an x-ray. He prescribed pain medication. We left about $80 poorer and with no solution.
Finally, my mom found a local podiatrist. He had an excellent reputation in the entire valley. He was in a clean, yet modest office in a downtown building. There were several elderly people in the waiting room. On the walls were various diplomas, one of which indicated that the Doctor was a surgeon in the Korean war.
He sat me down, looked my foot over, disinfected the lot then cut a notch in the toenail. Then he took a chisel-like tool, gently inserted it into the notch, then (without warning) rammed it all the way into the matrix. It was a searing lance of screaming agony. In a swift motion he used another tool to pry out the offending shard. He washed the whole thing down with iodine, bandaged me up, and the sopped the blood off the floor with paper towels.
Total cost: $35 cash in hand. I walked out of the office and went to work pushing carts at the local market the same day.
Now that's affordable health care. Pay cash for what you need. Keep a modest policy for catastrophic stuff like brain tumors.
People should have a choice. They should be able to choose what option they want.
Employers have expenses. Here's an example of the types of things a business has to pay for:
Rent
Insurance
Advertising
Materials (to sell)
Office Supplies
Payroll (which includes all subsets of "things that are required to keep people on the payroll")
What's left is profit.
When the government makes employers add expenses for regulation and taxes, what do you think gives in that budget? Shall the business stop paying rent? Advertising?
The place that gives is Payroll. That is what will happen when employers have to provide benefits by law. Wages will go down. Plain and simple. Or people will get cut.
Every so often I get the exciting privilege of giving my workers a raise. I have occasionally asked, "would you like me to give a raise across the board or provide health insurance?" The answer is invariably, "Just give me the money, I will take care of my own insurance."
Profits do not give, that's a myth. It simply does not exist. A business exists for the profit. Once the profit falls below a certain level, where it does not justify the risk, then the business closes doors and everyone gets a pink slip. Goodbye jobs.
Make no mistake. The Feds don't care about you. They only care about lining the pockets of favored constituents (ie not you).
The Federal Government is like an evil reverse Midas, everything it touches turns to dog crap.
There's a good reason why the CONSTITUTION of the UNITED STATES limits the Federal Government to a specific list of things and then reserves everything else (including health care) to the States or to the PEOPLE.
If the Sixteenth Amendment (income tax) were repealed you would get a 20% raise. And the government would still be able to fund all necessary functions quite easily. Could you take care of yourself with that 20% extra?
If fractional reserve banking were abolished, you would (in my estimation) get about a 30% raise (in terms of net purchasing power). Could you take care of yourself then?
How much would you give to charity if there were no Federal programs for the poor?

Hey Shawn, believe it or not, im writing to you not to beg again for information on the army I am eagerly awaiting, but to comment on your thoughts on health care. Pardon the surely endless spelling and grammatical mistakes, this is a spur rant. I welcome your responses, for or against.
Whenever I hear people talking about how amazing socialized medicine is, I am reminded of the old grass is greener saying. There seems to be this grand ideal about it that all other countries in the world have amazing medical care for all, for no cost, and they are all living happy, sickness free lives without a care in the world. But the fact is, there is no perfect system. Nothing is going to provide everyone what they want, or maybe even need. It is the way of the world.
I honestly think that if we as a country develop a plan of health care paid for by the government, or by businesses, it would be one of the biggest mistakes in our history. The costs for just medicare and medicade now are astounding, and would balloon to unimaginable numbers if spread to cover everything. The only way to pay for such huge costs would be to tax the american people to death. And that only hurts the lower class more than they already have been. Everyone likes to talk about how much this would help people who cant afford health care now, but how will they afford a home when they are paying crushing taxes? And we can't lay all of it on the wealthy, because the moment we try to do that, they will be gone, and we will be in much worse shape then.
Another point to consider is that as it stands, we provide, I feel, some of the best care in the world. We have many of the best doctors and scientists working for us every day. When was the last time you heard of anyone having to go to another country to have a special procedure? They all come here. Because we have the best. And why? Because in our system they will not be making the federal wage for a doctor. I think the moment the government starts deciding what to pay our doctors, they will be gone. They go where the money is just like the rest of us would.
A great irony I think is that people believe people are just falling dead in the streets because the hospitals wont admit them. Maybe I missed those news bits. Because it seems to be the other way around. In the socialized medicine countries, they have to wait weeks or months for care, even if they need it immediately. But in this country we have immigrants who come into the country illegally, have nothing, but if they need care, they can go to the hospital, and get the care they need.
It seems to me we are going about this in the wrong way. Why are we not working to reduce the costs of health care now, instead of just band-aiding the problem by having the federal government write a blank check to the health insurance industry? I think everyone would agree that health care costs are totally out of this world, so why are we just ignoring this? Isn't it a better idea to work on bringing them down than just throwing up our arms and saying "oh well, just pay them what they want?"

One big point in the healthcare debate that has been pointed out repeatedly in interviews and articles I've come across is that currently insurance companies use 15-30 cents of every dollar they take in on overhead costs--mostly those things you listed above including profit. The other 70-85 cents of each dollar is spent on medical expenses--doctors, nurses, equipment, and medicine. Shareholders in these companies want that profit percentage as high as possible and encourage the companies to limit those medical expenditures as much as possible. These limitations basically mean that they do everything they can to avoid treatment ... which sucks if you are sick and need treatment.
The hope is that the government system would be able to drastically reduce that overhead. They don't have to pay for those expensive TV commercials. Those evil bureuacrats everyone fears have much more reasonable paychecks than the evil CEOs people tend to ignore. The government, as much as you hate it, is not for profit in the same sense as the insurance companies. Most sources I've seen assume the government overhead should be somewhere around 3-5 cents on the dollar.
Insurance companies only real goal is to make money, and they are very good at that. However, I think the goal of healthcare needs to be making people healthy. The government can prioritize that in a way that insurance companies cannot.

Of course their is room for interpretation and such interpretation will depend greatly on your other beliefs, but in Article 1, Section 8 I think it is pretty easy to place healthcare under the category of "general Welfare." You can certainly argue that governement run healthcare isn't in the best interest of everyone (I would disagree), but I don't see the unconstitutional argument.

Although you certainly are right about many elected officials I don't think you are right about all of them, and most people in the government are not elected officials and I think many of those people (again, not all) do care deeply about taking care of their national community.

My only response here is the "general welfare" clause. By that interpretation there is no limit on the federal government at all since they will simply claim that whatever they are doing is the general welfare. You name it. Thomas Jefferson said (paraphrasing) that if that were the case, the constitution may as well be a blank piece of paper.
3000 Projects
Blue Table Painting has now completed over 3000 projects. That's the equivalent of about 500 full armies. Probably more. Yay!

I feel like I am spinning my wheels. No matter how I work I can't seem to move the studio ahead. I've been in the "badger hole" for 18 months and there's no end in sight. Granted of course we're having a groovy old time.

Wood Elves (4500 pts) are out of the assembly-works for the Pandora's army special. There are extra points in both of these armies to account for a heavy amount of heroes. Each army is at least 2100 pts without magic items.

Deathguard (4000 pts) ... ditto. Ready to paint starting tomorrow.

Imperial Guard Strike Force (2000 pts) ... also ready to go. We used about 60 space marine scout bodies with cadian rebreather heads to make a delta-force looking army with FOUR valkyries as transports. And plenty of support units, a lot of them converted up.

That's the rest of the five Pandora's armies ready for paint. The 4000 pts of Tau are already underway. Test fire warrior was completed this morning and looking sharp. Red and white is one of my favorite color schemes. It stands out very well.

This Saturday we'll be having a studio match. Renn vs Skymarshall Anonymo playing Warhammer Fantasy. Vampire Counts vs Warriors of Chaos.

We painted up a unit of Marauders with Wulfrik and a Shaggoth for the game. Yum! The Batrep should be up on www.youtube.com/bluetablepainting early this coming week. I'll be referee-ing and and taking footage of the battle.

The first week in August I 'm making terrain. It's not going to be a huge thing. I just want to make some for the studio and for personal enjoyment. But if you want me to make you a set, just set a budget (of $200-600) and give some general parameters. A typical set will cover a table heavily, and two tables reasonably. With a higher budget I make it more detailed, expansive or just make more pieces (or even different sets). As usual I need half-down.
