Long and Short of it

I was up at 6am this morning, keeping caught up on client correspondence. I am watching Arrested Development season one.

I have four painters working at the studio, cross-pollinating techniques. We're doing Space Hulk and a TON of imperial guard tanks. It's a load of fun. Renn and Dane brought a zombie video game down, but I made them take it into the break room.

I snapped some various pics of the Fateweavers, too. I still need to make and paint the Heralds, two on foot and two on disc.

The Forge World order came in today. Notably, this included three rhinoxen which we plan on converting into a type of Thunderwolf cavalry. So far, so good.

The studio is a place of peace, light and happiness. It's a good healthy place to be.

Nope, not sick of the baby pics. I just love my little snuggler!

Oceanic Eldar Vid

This is old, not everything is in there. But it gives the feel for it. This bad girl is clearing 4000 pts now. Oh, man.

And I've got two Forge World super-heavy Eldar grav tanks: one Scorpion and one Cobra. But I don't think they're going in this army. If you want to buy them as part of an Eldar commission they are $160 each (while supplies last!).

Baby Flower

The church halloween party was tonight. Willow was dressed up as this cute flower. Hmmm... this on the heels of Deathguard stuff.

Anyway, I also got up some Ork Barricades for sale tonight.

Oceanic Eldar Redux

Last Saturday I played a game of 40K with Renn. I have about an hour of footage that I need to edit.

As for my list, I would have liked to take some different units but I didn't have them. I would have dropped the Vypers and taken Fire Dragons. Reason being that Deathguard don't die well to anything that does not cause instant death. Fire Dragons are the bactine for the pustulent cyst that is Deathguard.

I will be painting up twenty Fire Dragons in the near future. They're already on order.

Although Renn was afraid of them, the Fire Prisms were not as effective as I hoped.

I would also drop Mind War. Getting into that 18" range was just always a little too dangerous. I would have taken Fortune instead. A Farseer with Spirit Stones can use two powers a turn, so having a third just in case the base two (Doom and Guide).

And three more War Walkers are coming.

I plan, in the future, to run the Dire Avengers on foot, and two units of Fire Dragons in the Wave Serpents. No Vypers. They look great, but they just do not have the punch they need.

Karaaaate CHOP!

I got up bright and early Monday morning: 12:09am to be precise.

I immediately got cracking on the email Inbox, and that is now all caught up. I'll be ready for a bright and shiny Monday workday.

It's back to bed for me, of course.

So, I say, bring on the new projects. We're ready.

UPDATE: It's Monday morning, been pounding away for about a half-hour. Still caught up. Boooyah.

Two White Horses on a Red Hill

Here's a little smidgin of sunshine. Willow has two little teeth coming through on the bottom. She can now demolish bread or banana slices.

She loves to wave hello or goodbye. She's ever so good natured. She kicks her legs with excitement whenever a human she loves comes near. And that's mostly everyone. When we sing hymns in church, she tries to sing along.

End the Fed Review part 01 of 02

"I've written this book to explain why I think the system of Fed domination must come to an end." --p4

As usual, I am overwhelmed with excitement to read a new book by Ron Paul. Weighing in at 210 pages, and only of modest page area, it is good for multiple reads. A dedicated reader can finish it in an afternoon, or a week in the lavatory. The hardback edition is under $13 on www.amazon.com I ordered three copies.

This book is more easily digestible, and more approachable that his previous works. A Foreign Policy of Freedom for example consists of mainly transcripts of his speeches on the House floor, without annotation or explanation. This is to my mind why Ron Paul was not overly successful two years ago. He doesn't really fill in the back story, to understand him you have to be at least roughly familiar with certain documents (like the Constitution). Things that are obvious to him (like states' rights) are not obvious to the average American.

End the Fed is really a misnomer. While that is certainly one of the main thrusts, the book deals with the basics of the banking system overall. The book could have well been called Sound Money.

Chapter 1 is entitled "Why you should care" and in plain language explains the connection between the life of the average Joe and the role of the Fed in manipulating money. This is not conspiracy theory. It's not a bombastic tirade. It's done in the tone of a detective presenting the facts to the victim of a burglary.

There is a healthy dose of folksiness in there. Ron Paul talks about his old coin collection, his grandmother's land, his breakfast with the Fed Chairman. This is not contrived, it rather connects the dots in a memorable and human fashion. Sort of like chocolate chips in a cookie.

There is also a golden nugget in there that mimics a thought I've been having: the real problem is the very concept of Fractional Reserve Banking. The concept of banking (other than its role to warehouse commodities/money and facilitate transfers) is rotten to the core. If the common man understood it he would not take part in it. But that's another topic.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from the book so far:

"If you solve the money monopoly problem by ending the Fed, you solve many other problems, too. Essentially you take away from the government the capacity to use financial trickery to expand without limit. It is the first step to restoring constitutional government. Without the Fed, the federal government would have to live within its means. It would still be too big and too intrusive, just like all state governments are today, but the outrageous empire at home and abroad would have to come to an end. There are other benefits as well, such as stopping the business cycle, ending inflation, building prosperity for all Americans, and putting an endo thte corrupt collaboration between government and banks that virtually defines the operations of public policy..." -p7

"For an answer [to the cause of centralization of power] we can turn to a monumental study published in 2006 by Spanish economist Jesus Huerta de soto. He places the blame on the very institution of fractional-reserve banking." --p15

"Just so that we are clear: the modern system of money and banking is not a free-market system. It is a system that is half socialized-- propped up by government-- and one that could never be sustained as it is in a clean market environment. And this is the core of the problem." --p18

"The market, or the black market if necessary, will always set the real prices of everything." --p49

"Imagine an irresponsible teenager with an unlimited line of credit. The parents, teachers, pastors, and authorities in his life are ultimately powerless to change his habits. Now imagine that teenager armed to the teeth and also immune even from the rule of law. This is what we have with a government backed by a central bank." --p67

"Very simply, there can't be a more immoral system of money than tone based on a banking monopoly that can counterfeit money in secret with no oversight and protection of the people. The moral argument against the Fed[eral Reserve] should be enough for decently well-informed people to dispense with it posthaste." --156

Anyone who follows this blog knows that I am not overly fond of banks. This is a reasonable position. I am still working on figuring out a system by which the common man can free himself in a practical and peaceable and legal manner. Every book I read gets me a step closer.

Twiddling my Thumbs

Pic: a display board for a custom Tzeentch Daemons army I made about five years ago.

Gentle reader, I'm bored out of my skull. Things are caught up. Everything is assigned. I'm ready to set up new projects whenever you are.

I'll be available Saturday for any matter.

Ho hum.

Tertiary Notes
I ordered three copies of End the Fed. That book is a delight. I'm scarfing it up. It's about monetary policy. I highly recommend. It's only $12 at Amazon. I have a few copies to give out if you want one with your order.

If you're thinking of doing a Skaven army, just keep us in mind. I'm going to order a ton of them first thing and be ready to set up armies. We'll have options for bulk discounts.

Notes about Trade-ins

I just updated the Trade-in rates. For those that bother to read it to the end, you will notice that the rates are temporarily up noticeably, nearly double.

The value of second-hand figures on the market is about 40-60% of retail. It's tough to get above that since online stores will typically discount as much as 30%. So, why haggle with a private individual when you can just pick what you want?

The thing to remember is that I am working with the secondary market as well, and I need to make a profit on top of that. Don't get me wrong, the trade-ins can turn into a sweet deal. However, they can also go terribly, terribly wrong. Notably, I have bins upon bins of "scrap" models that are worthless except as base decoration. If that.

I have to be very picky with what I re-sell to clients. They have to be as-new condition.

Trade-in Rates for Late October and November

Here are the trade-in rates for early Fall 2009. I'm offering service credit in trade for models.
Read this completely as I have recently improved several aspects of this program. Notably: I am now trading in army books. Also, you do not need to figure out the retail prices of your trade-in items.
.
NEW: we are also accepting as trade armies that BTP painted. The trade value will be much higher since it will account for the value of assembly/painting.
.
We will also pay cash. After the models arrive we'll paypal you the agreed amount. The rate is generally $0.15 on the dollar (fifteen percent of retail).
.
You can usually get a much better deal going to the secondary market (local shop, ebay) on your own. However, the advantage of trading in with us is that you are likely to be able to unload disparate items without a lot of hassle (e.g. finding various buyers, setting up payment, lots of minor questions).
.
If you want to trade in, we need a list of what you have. You do NOT need to calculate the retail value, but it helps. Please tell me the condition (e.g. new in box, new on sprue, assembled, primed). The rates below are a multiplier. If the entry says 0.30 it means you would get $30 for $100 worth of retail items. Just take the retail total and multiply it by the number. You do not need to figure this out; you can just send in your list of stuff to bluetablepainting@gmail.com .
.
I just know there's someone who goes out to their garage, surveys the mass of unpainted models, sighs then turns out the light. This program will hopefully allow someone with the "white primer horde" to finally show up with a painted army. As an added bonus, your models will get a good home where they will be painted and loved.
.
We don’t need painted figures. Exception: if they only have a little bit done with them; not too thick, not too many layers. Primed models are OK, again not too thick. NEW: If you send painted models and they are un-useable because the paint/primer is on too thick, the trade value reverts to 0.10 (it's actually almost zero). If this is the case I will inform you and you'll have the option to get your models back.
.
You can also get a credit of at least $10 to help with your shipping costs. NEW: I will add this automatically as part of the quote.
.
If you want to trade-in figures, but don't have a project ready, that's OK, I will confirm your total and then you will have it on tap for when you want to use it.
.
This trade-in is recorded as a payment on your project. It is non-refundable except at our discretion (eg you can’t refuse the project and then get your trade-in amount refunded as cash). Trade-in can be applied to cost of models, assembly or painting as you wish. This means you can also just get models sent to you (this is limited to models that are commonly available, eg not Forge World).
.
Generally, we only need in-print models that are currently in production. . These rates and conditions may change so it is recommended to check in every once in a while. I am likely to update the numbers about once a month. The plan right now is to update every first of the month. Fairness is the guiding principle.
. Forge World 0.70
. Army books $8 credit (must be current edition, no OOP)
. Assault on Black Reach Models:
Complete set of orks $9 credit
Complete set of space marines $9 credit
Space Marine Dreadnought $5 credit
Small rulebook $4 credit
Template sprue (complete) $2 credit
. 40K 0.40
. Warhammer Fantasy 0.40
. Hordes 0.30
. War Machine 0.30
. Battlefleet Gothic 0.20
. Lord of the Rings 0.15

Please note that some armies might net more or less. Send me the list and I'll tell you what's up.

Furioso

I woke up this morning bright and early. My ten year old daughter, K, was up before the crack of dawn watching TV. She gets herself ready for school, laying out her clothes the night before. She's ever so responsible. Unlike her father. I slept in (well I guess if you call getting up at 8am sleeping in) and had to drive the kids to school. They got there on time.

I arrived at the studio parking lot at almost the exact same time as Sarah. She was still preening herself in her car. We got cracking on the day's work. Three more packages of Space Hulk, each with custom foam, got out today. We ordered specialty boxes of just the right size. I still have five copies of Space Hulk on hand for clients who may want to get their painted copy of this soon to be discontinued game.

The big news is that I picked up an Eldar Type ii Cobra super-heavy Grav Tank. And a Scorpion Type ii Scorpion super-heavy Grav Tank. Both exquisite Forge World models, only $160 each if you want to commission either of them.

The studio Dark Elves army now has two gorgeous Hydras, absolutely beautiful creatures they are. I can't wait to play them in a game.

This coming week, we are working on two huge tank projects, including an inquisitorial Warhound.

As usual, I'm ready to book any project. Let's roll!

Put on Your Red Shoes

Oh, my what a past few days it's been. I've been up at around 6am each morning and diving in head first.

Let's start with last night. G (my four-year old son) was with me at the office for a little bit, then fell asleep on the way home. He woke up again at 8pm and stayed up until 2am.

My wife and I watched some Seinfeld then Proposal with Sandra Bullock (you had me at "Bullock"). She's one of my faves. That was romantic. But then the baby was up until all hours. So, we were pretty sleep deprived. Well, my wife was. I slept through the whole ordeal. That was romantic?

Today at the studio we had three more sets of Space Hulk come through, just as beautiful as the first run. I found some sets at a local shop. I have five more sets in stowage.

Details on Space Hulk Here

The bulk of the second wave for Fateweavers is done. I still have to convert the Heralds, basically. That's the hard part. Over seventy Horrors for that one. It looks great. No pics yet. Still working on the details.

I am setting up projects for completion in November and December. I'm at your disposal for any matter.

You can even set up an army completely over the phone: I can help you set up your army list, decide what to include, make the quote, take your painting specs by dictation and take a credit card by phone. I also like checks and MO.

Today I raced home at 3pm to help my wife, relieving her of duty and letting her sleep. There's nothing I love more than to be in the living room in the sweet bosom of my family. I'm currently watching Arthur and the Invisibles with my kids. It got terrible reviews, but I liked it. The animation and art was extremely evocative. I thought it was a decent story. Certainly great for the kids.

There are two very obscure references for the title of this post. Can you guess them?

Death Korps at ease and on the block

Just put this up for sale:

Giant Chaos Warrior

This thing must be like a foot tall. Not sure.

Chaos Warrior Titan

Might make a good Giant for a Warriors of Chaos army.

Lizardmen on eBay

I found this army on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260491945589&ssPageName=ADME:B:WNA:US:1123

It's a good deal. You should buy it, send it to us and have us paint it. Cost to paint is $720. You can also pick and choose according to our regular pricing guide.

Personally, I would drop the Saurus Cavalry and Salamander. Other than that, it's a pretty good looking army. Oh, and I would add ten Saurus Warriors. In fact, I would do that trade: give me the cavalry/salamander and I'll provide ten Saurus Warriors.

Revving

It's 6am and I'm up and ready to get started. Engines humming.

I'm ready to set up new projects. Pandora's armies, regular armies, turbo armies, anything you want. Any project large or small we're ready to go.

I figured out why I was waking up in the middle of the night! I had a scan scheduled on my computer at 2am every morning, so the monitor would click on and there would be a soft chiming noise. Just enough to wake me up in ten minutes, but not enough to make me conscious of it.

Advance Scout Report

Shawn,

I hope this email finds you well. Here's the last week's news.

These goblin generals are adorable

chapterhouse studios released salamander land raider and rhino kits that looks awesome

Legion of the Damned models coming out (will be metal)

These guys may make some neat special characters (maybe in an ogryn themed guard army). There's also some amazing space marine type special character models there and some elaborate bases that I just spent too much money on. (Don't tell my wife!)

Anybody Else?

Thank goodness for Sunday! Or else I would never slow down. I get a sense of desperation on Saturday evening, like Oh Man I'm running out of time to get work done!

It takes the morning to wind down.

What can I say about today? I took a long walk down to the edge of the plateau and looked out over the valley: vast rectangles of deep lush green crops surrounded by copses of flame-colored trees. There's a little cul-de-sac where dirt and leaf compost have formed a bed for lanky sprawling sunflowers. The weather was perfect; overcast for the most part, with the sun spraying down into the valley, and just warm enough to get me to take off my sweater.

It was at that moment that the last strings of the knots in my mind came loose and I was able to relax. I'm getting overly worked up about things.

I blew the afternoon snuggling with me kids, playing a little space hulk with the boys, and watching Discovery Channel.

Stargate: Universe Review

I want that hour of my life back.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn!

OK, one more episode.

CONQUEROR rough notes

Conqueror

Normal Play for Skirmish

The game is played using the normal rules for Warhammer Fantasy, but with every unit counting and moving as a little hero.

1. Beginning of the Turn

A. Use Items

B. Recovery

2. Movement

3. Magic

4. Ranged

5. Close Combat

6. End of the Turn

A. Withdraw

Combined Fire

A unit of five or more of the same ranged weapon (same entry type in the army list) that also has a unit champion can form a line of fire. This effectively becomes a unit. They re-roll missed shots.

Expendables

Models with a single wound are considered expendables. These are the henchmen; the red shirts. When they die, they die and are removed from play.

At the end of every meta-game turn you may receive reinforcements depending on your influence and what is going on in the game.

Champions

Regular troopers can become champions in the course of the game story. This is GM initiative.

Ganging Up

Each model’s base only has four sides. It can only be engaged by two models per side. Models with a larger base edge can have more than one model attacking as long as they fit entirely. However, models can only attack if they have their full base edge in contact—no partials or diagonals.

Disengaging

A model can disengage from close combat by using a normal move without penalty.

Exception: if the model is the only other model in the combat from it’s side then every model that it disengages from gets a free strike. This is resolved immediately, before the model is actually moved.

Running Away

At the end of your turn you may voluntarily end the game by Running Away.

At the end of the turn, check to see if half the wounds in your warband have been killed. If so, your Hero may make a leadership test to make them keep fighting for another turn. Otherwise they Run Away and the game ends.

Orders

A Hero may issue two orders a turn. Cannot be used on himself.

1. Get back up! Use any time an expendable is killed. On a 4+ the model is not killed but retains one wound.

2. Keep Fighting! Use any time your main Hero dies. Your warband keeps fighting for one more turn.

3. Courage! Use any time a member of your warband (other than the hero) fails a Leadership check. You may re-roll it (once).

4. Shake it off! Use during the recovery phase when a model in the warband fails a recovery check.

A Champion may issue one order a turn. He may only issue them to a model of similar type (ie the same army list entry) within 12”.

1. Take Aim! Use any time one of your warband is about to make a ranged attack. You may re-roll a miss.

2. Strike Now! Use any time one of your warband is about to make a close combat attack. You may re-roll that one attack.

Spells

A wizard can cast spells just like the rulebook says. However, there are no “common” dice either for dispel or casting. Effectively, unless you have a wizard there is usually no way to stop a successful spell. Spells will have a different effect once we start playing the game at normal point levels (ie 1000 pts or higher).

Fate

A fate token can be burned at the end of a game to ensure that the central Hero survives.

A fate token can be burned to re-roll a single roll (die or group of dice).

You get a Fate token at the beginning of every board scenario—sometimes more.

Micellany

No penalty for shooting at a single target.

No break tests.

Conqueror

Object of the game

The game progresses through three stages during which your band of heroes will grow in power and stature, and gather an army to lead into epic battle.

Only mortal armies are allowed. The following armies are disallowed No mounts.

  • Stranger in a Strange Land: Personal Power and heroic companions
  • Gathering Storm: Getting Followers and an arsenal of magic
  • Final Battles: fighting full enemy armies and killing enemy heroes

Each player needs a war chest which will hold his resources.

Gold and Silver

Gold can be used to buy magic items, and also hire mercenaries.

Influence

One point of influence will attract 100 points of followers. This is above and beyond any attached heroes.

One influence token can be burned to re-roll a leadership test during a game.

A Hero gets one influence token per game played and won. Sometimes two.

A Hero with fifteen influence tokens can be upgraded to a Lord. After this, he can’t burn Fate tokens if it would bring him below fifteen.

Fate

A fate token can be burned at the end of a game to ensure that the central Hero survives.

A fate token can be burned to re-roll a single roll (die or group of dice).

In the Beginning: Formation

Pick a Hero and weaponry. You have 200 points to spend. No magic items. Just regular equipment. You may buy henchmen individually.

You will go through three adventures where you will gain followers. Other characters who will join your band, and later lead your army.

Pothole

Remember how I'm always harping about "moments of bliss" and how great life is? Well, today I had an opposite of one of those. A moment of utter black frustration. I got home and just broke down before getting into the house. My wife came out to the garage to see what on earth the racket was about. She knows how to get me smoothed out-- a little shoulder rub and a turkey pot pie.

All is well.

The big news is that I'm running a studio Warhammer Fantasy campaign, RPG style. I call it Conqueror. Each person starts out doing Skirmish games and eventually leading up to full-scale battles.

I played a game of this in the morning, then took my kids out to see Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. The four year old actually sat through the whole thing which is pretty impressive. We are definitely going to own that movie. I was entertained and it was appropriate for very young kids. I had like four really good guffaws out of it. Very clever.

Two new units of Dire Avengers just came off the line for the Oceanic Eldar. And a second Farseer. I can't wait to give them a spin.

And tonight I'm going to see if Stargate: Universe really sucks or whether that was just the first episode.

I am currently booking projects for November. We're ready whenever you are.

Squeaking with Delight

New plastic kit coming out for Skaven. I wonder what size that base is? It'll likely go into a unit of rats, so it can't be on a chariot base since that doesn't add up. I predict a specialty base.

Not a fan of the whispy smoke, that sort of pegs you into painting it that way. But it sure does look cool. Don't get me wrong. This kit is a home run of coolness.

Death Korps on the Block

Just put up some Death Korps, something like six listings. This can be expanded into an army; we can match.

See pics and purchase info.

Life is Hard in the U.S.

Sometimes the sprinkles on my ice cream are a little waxy.
Sometimes my ice cubes aren't perfectly square.

Can you think of any more?

Custom Carrying Cases

These are the new carrying cases that I have on hand now. You can have your completed army shipped in them.

Blood Wolves

Prototypes for the Blood Wolves.

I'm a fan of alternate color schemes and this is what I came up with-- red-armored Space Wolves. They turned out pretty slick.

According to the background of Fenris (the space wolf home world), part of the year it's very hot and there are volcanic eruptions. This gave me an excuse to break from the traditional snow-bound stuff you see.

Black Knights

These six Black Knights, super-customized and riding high on their spectral steeds are on the block. They come with a magnetized movement tray.

See more pics and purchasing info.

Father of Plagues

Just finished the Father of Plagues model.

This is a unique piece. One-of-a-kind. On request I can have it signed on the bottom by both artists. And dated.

More pics.

This is for sale. If you want him, you can pick him up off the site or just email or phone me. I can take CC by phone. Or check or MO. Or hard metals. Or trade (see previous post for trade-in rates).

Does this have merit?

Wind Rider Host

This is an army you can commission. It features a ton of jetbikes and is supposedly one of the hardest armies out there.

All bikes are on metal dowels and have Guardian bodies (from new plastic kits to replace the old crappy conehead-in-a-vest ones). Warlocks and Farseer are converted from plastics and appropriately cool-looking.

Cost is $1950 everything included. Save $100 by giving us license on how they are painted. Nothing lame, we promise.

A deposit of $950 pulls the trigger.

Various Testimonials

Shawn,

Just wanted to let you know the order arrived today and in perfect order with no breakage. Wow the pictures were great but in the flesh as it were they are even better, it's simply amazing what a great paint job does to what were once tired old out of production models. This will certainly brighten up the look of my High Elves on the table and as soon as funds allow I'll be calling on your services again. Can i just say what wonderful customer service you guys give, the sort it seems that only fellow enthusiasts can be capable of. Feel free to post these words to the website, if they help to convince one more person to use your services then it's been worth it. For all those gamers out there that want nicely painted models but lack the necessary skills and or patience to do the work themselves you only need to think of Blue Table really can't say enough how happy i am with the results. Keep up the great work.

Ok - fire the camera person! Why you say? Because he/she did not do justice to the artist's work on my Infinity models! I was fooled into thinking they looked very good from the pictures on your site, but they are so much more fabulous in-person, truly! I know Blue Table is really into modding and painting the big armies, but you have proven to me you really care about us little skirmishers too. I won't hesitate to send more models in the future and recommend you everywhere for the outstanding quality of your work. Thanks so much Blue Table!

Hi Shawn I received the red hunters SM army, there was no damage to any of the models ( thanks Sarah ) I like your take on the Vulkan army lots of infantry models interesting, look forward to trying them out on the table, if i video a batrep in the future some think am looking to do i will send you a link so you can take a look.

Please pass on my thanks to the guys who worked on the army, thanks Shawn.

Jeweled Treasure

This is a collection of miniatures I've had stowed away for a few years now. It was a concept army I came up with. It uses mainly Heru from Crocodile Games. They are hawk-headed egyption type warriors. Then using other kits from GW (notably High Elf plastics and Cities of Death bitz) I created this Heru Sky Raiders force.

More pics.

It consists of:
2x Mages
2x Sky Chariots
10x Skyboard Riders (cavalry)
2x Skyboard Heroes
2x Bolt Throwers and crew
3x fillers (mage paraphernalia)
19x Spearmen (with shields and bows)
30x Archers
2x Giant Desert Hawks

This is obviously highly converted, highly themed. I loved this army. But it's time to move on. It's on the block for $950. That includes shipping in the US and to select other countries (eg Australia, Europe).
